Who will win the IPL in 2024?
The 17th season of the IPL is quickly drawing upon us and cricketing fans worldwide will soon have the opportunity to watch some of the world’s greatest cricketers strut their stuff on the world’s biggest stage.
As always with the IPL, several teams look to be in with a chance of winning, and today’s IPL matches are always hard to predict.
Looking to defend their 2023 crown are the Chennai Super Kings, who still boast one of the most iconic cricketers in their ranks in the shape of MS Dhoni. Standing atop the IPL all-time standings alongside the Mumbai Indians with five tournament wins apiece, the Super Kings will be aiming to become the tournament’s most successful side this year.
However, they certainly won’t have it all their own way, as every team is stocked full of talent and every match has the capacity to go right down to the wire.
With the betting between the top sides looking tight, the pundits are split on who will win the IPL in 2024.
However, that’s where we come in!
In this guide, we will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each team in this year’s competition, and we will take a brief look back through the history of the IPL and how you can bet on one of cricket’s most exciting tournaments.
2023 IPL recap
After having been impacted by COVID, the 2023 edition of the IPL saw the tournament return to its traditional home-and-away format. With the same 10 teams returning from 2022 drawn into two groups of five, four teams would qualify for the season ending playoffs.
After a thrilling group stage, it was the 2022 champions the Gujarat Titans who held the best record and topped the league. The Titans were joined in the playoffs by the Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians.
The first team to cement their spot in the 2023 final were the Chennai Super Kings who beat the Gujarat Titans by 15 runs in Qualifier 1. To reach the final, and have any chance of defending their crown, the Titans then faced off against the Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 who had earlier beaten the Super Giants in the Elimination game.
Producing a dominant performance, the Titans powered past Mumbai to set up an enticing final with the Chennai Super Kings.
In the final, it was the Super Kings who had too much firepower with both the bat and ball as they powered to a five-wicket victory and claimed a record-equaling fifth IPL title.
Other award winners
Despite the Super Kings rightly taking up all the headlines, there were several other memorable displays:
- Orange Cap Winner (most runs): Shubman Gill — Gujurat Titans
- Purple Cap Winner (most wickets): Mohammed Shami — Gujurat Titans
- IPL MVP: Shubman Gill — Gujurat Titans
As is now IPL tradition, the 2023 IPL auction was incredibly competitive. The most expensive player was English all-rounder Sam Curran. Signed for 18.50 Crore, Curran was signed by the Punjab Kings but couldn’t help them advance out of the group stage.
History of IPL winners
Courtesy of their 2023 victory, the Chennai Super Kings joined the Mumbai Indians at the top of the IPL rankings as the two teams with the most IPL wins in the history of the league. The Kolkata Knight Riders have two wins, with the Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujurat Titans being the only other franchises to have tasted IPL success.

Who will win IPL 2024?
The 2024 IPL season is already gearing up to be a special tournament.
With the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, Jos Buttler, Glenn Maxwell and new Indian superstar Yashasvi Jaiswal all set to star, the 2024 tournament stands to be special in so many ways.
IPL 2024 details
The format of the 2024 tournament will follow on from 2023, where all ten teams will be placed into two groups of five.
Each team will play 14 matches in the group stage, with the top four teams advancing to the playoff stage of the tournament. For the finalists to be declared, there will be two qualifiers and an eliminator. The two surviving teams from these matches will reach the final and battle it out for glory.
Let’s take a look at each team’s chances in more detail:
Chennai Super Kings — IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses
Five-time champions, the Chennai Super Kings, will be hungry for more success and look to stand every chance.
With the bat, look for seasoned campaigners Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell all to star. The experienced spin trio of Ravi Jadeja, Moeen Ali and Mitchell Santner will be key to their chances of repeating their success from 2023, however, a lack of a talismanic fast bowler could hinder their chances in tight matches.
Chances
On paper, the Chennai Super Kings look to have one of the best rosters in this year’s tournament. Containing an exciting blend of youth and experience, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them go all the way once again.
Gujurat Titans — IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses
Since emerging as a brand-new franchise, the Gujurat Titans have established themselves as a major force. The winners in 2022, they almost repeated the feat last year, eventually succumbing to the Super Kings in the final.
With reigning MVP Shubman Gill supported by Kane Williamson, Matthew Wade and David Miller, the Titans have as strong a batting line up as any in the tournament. Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan offer experience and class with the ball. Whether they can get over their last season’s final heartbreak remains to be seen.
Chances
Having won the title and reached the final in each of their first two seasons, there’s nothing to indicate that the Titans won’t be one of the top sides in this year’s tournament.
Mumbai Indians — IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses
Looking for a record-breaking sixth championship, the Mumbai Indians have two of the best batters in the world in their line up, and will hope that Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav will be able to power them to a record sixth IPL victory.
Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best white-ball bowlers in the world and will shoulder the bulk of the Indians wicket taking responsibilities. A lack of a top-class spinner may come back to haunt them but they look like a team built to go deep.
Chances
After falling in Qualifier 2 last season, the Indians look more than capable of bettering that effort this year. Not lacking firepower, Mumbai will be desperate to get their hands back on that IPL trophy and win their first tournament since 2020.
Rajasthan Royals — IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses
The Rajasthan Royals won the first-ever iteration of the IPL, but since then have found the going tough. Beaten finalists in 2022, they were inconsistent to the extreme in 2023 and narrowly missed out on the playoffs.
With Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson and new superstar Yashasvi Jaiswal in the lineup, there are high hopes of a return to the promised land.
Chances
After just missing out on the playoffs last year, there are high hopes of a return to the playoffs this time around. Their hopes may rely on the form of 2022 IPL MVP Jos Buttler, who will travel to India in need of some runs following some poor performances for England.
Lucknow Super Giants — IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses
The Lucknow Super Giants had an impressive debut season in 2022, reaching the playoffs. They matched that effort in 2023 but fell short in the Eliminator match.
With a talented line up, KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock form one of the best opening partnerships in the tournament. David Willey and Marcus Stoinis are two great all-rounders, but whether the Super Giants have a bowler capable of taking enough wickets when it matters remains a real question mark.
Chances
The Super Giants will want to keep their record of never having missed the playoffs intact but advancing further looks difficult. Containing an explosive lineup with the bat, the runs should flow, but they do have something to prove with the ball and will need all their bowlers fit and firing.
Royal Challengers Bangalore — IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses
RCB were another side to narrowly miss out on the 2023 playoffs. Yet to win an IPL title, time is running out for the king of cricket, Virat Kohli to set that record right.
Boasting a talented squad with both bat and ball, RCB look to have a squad capable of finally breaking their IPL hoodoo, but they will need to be far more consistent than they were back in 2023 to compete with some of the league’s best sides.
Chances
There isn’t anything to suggest that RCB don’t have the quality to finally go all the way this year, but time is ticking. With an aging squad and Kohli heading into the tournament without much cricket behind him, their time needs to be now.
Delhi Capitals — IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses
After a desperately disappointing campaign where the Delhi Capitals finished second bottom of the league table, much more will be expected this time around.
Set to lead their charge towards a first IPL title is David Warner. Now retired from tests and 50-over cricket, Warner will arrive fresh and will hope to be at his devastating best.
With an able cast around him which includes Harry Brook, Shai Hope, Lungi Ngidi and Kuldeep Yadav, a big campaign can be expected.
Chances
Yet to win an IPL title, the wait could go on for the Delhi Capitals. Their batting line up has power that few can match, but whether they can score enough runs consistently is a concern. The bowlers will need to perform well for them to have any chance.
Sunrisers Hyderabad — IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses
Winners back in 2016, the Sunrisers haven’t been to an IPL final since 2018 and will be hoping they can change that record this year.
The acquisition of Pat Cummins was a clear signal of intent that the Sunrisers mean business this year. After finishing bottom of the pile in 2023, there will be high hopes that Cummins can help inspire his new team to victory and fire them into the playoffs.
Chances
The signing of Cummins certainly provides some star power to an average looking bowling attack. From a batting point of view there is plenty of attacking talent with Travis Head, Glenn Phillips and Heinrich Klaasen all amongst the best T20 batters in the world. The Sunrisers look capable of pulling off many upsets.
Kolkata Knight Riders — IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses
The winners of the IPL back in 2014, there hasn’t been too much to cheer for Knight Rider fans and they head into this year’s tournament with plenty to prove.
Hoping to boost their chances of reaching the playoffs, the Knight Riders made history when they made Mitchell Starc the most expensive IPL player in history. Along with Gus Atkinson and Andre Russell, there is no shortage of pace in their attack.
Shreyas Iyer will lead the side and it will be down to him to score runs at the very top of the order. If he struggles, the Knight Riders long wait for a title looks set to go on.
Chances
Despite the signing of Starc, it still looks as if the Knight Riders have plenty to prove. Looking light in the batting department, there will be huge question marks over the number of runs that they will be able to score.
Punjab Kings — IPL betting odds, strengths and weaknesses
Completing the IPL lineup are the Punjab Kings. Seen by many as one of the tournament outsiders, the Kings boast a talented line up which on its day has the capacity to shock.
Led by Shikhar Dhawan, the English trio of Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran all bring a touch of class to the side. Whether or not they have the consistency to regularly compete alongside the tournament’s best teams is a major concern.
Chances
The Kings can’t be discounted but they lack depth in their bowling attack to reach the playoffs.
