Bangladesh pips above India to jump to 2nd place in the WTC 2025 table after a historic win vs NZ

WTC 2023-25: It was a memorable day in Bangladeshi cricket history. On Saturday, Bangladesh made history when they beat New Zealand in the first of two tests by 150 runs on the fifth day of the test. It was only the second time in Test history that the Bangla Tigers won a match against the Black Caps. This win came with a heroic effort from Taijul Islam.

The left-arm spinner ended up taking his second ten-wicket haul and took 4/109 and 6/75 in the game. He won the Man of the Match away, and Bangladesh has now taken a 1-0 unassailable lead in the series. Notably, this series is a part of the ongoing World Test Championship Cycle 2023–25. This win has caused some big turmoil in the WTC cycle, and Bangladesh has jumped to second place.

Prior to this game, both Bangladesh and New Zealand didn’t have any points. This was the first game for both teams in the ongoing WTC cycle. With a win, Bangladesh has pipped India to the second spot on the points table. Bangladesh got 12 points with the win and is below Pakistan, who has 24 points in two matches. India is third, with 16 points and 66.67 points.

India won one game, and one match ended in a draw against the West Indies. Australia is fourth with 30 points. India will be playing a two-match test series against South Africa starting on December 26. On the other hand, Pakistan will play a three-test match series in Australia, starting on December 14.

The upcoming series will decide which team will have the edge on the WTC table. Australia is the defending champion and will be pretty strong to challenge. India will also host England for a five-match test series at home, which will be one big series for both teams and will decide the positions of India. On the other hand, Bangladesh will have a good chance; if they can win the second test as well, they can stay in second place. The second BAN vs NZ test will start on December 6.
