After winning the Duleep Trophy for the West Zone, the Mumbai captain, Ajinkya Rahane will want the same in SMAT too. Mumbai’s lineup looks amazing with the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prithvi Shaw, Shardul Thakur and others. Both Jaiswal and Shaw have been in top-tier form in the Duleep Trophy. With his explosive batting style of Shaw, his performance in the domestic T20 league can open his doors for Team India.

Shardul Thakur who was a part of the T20 World Cup last year is nowhere to be seen around. His last T20i was in February this year. Recently, in an interview, he mentioned that the Indian team was looking at him as an all-format player. He also said he was waiting for a national comeback. “I am bowling well, getting wickets. Even in the last two white-ball series [against Zimbabwe and the West Indies] that I’ve played, I have taken wickets. So definitely looking for a national call again whenever they want my services,” he said.
Ajinkya Rahane led Mumbai squad for SMAT
Ajinkya Rahane may have played only 20 T20Is for India with an average of 20.83 but his T20 numbers are decent. Rahane was a part of the Rajasthan Royals squad for a long time before moving to Pune Supergiants. This year he was a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad and his SMAT performance will decide his place in the KKR team with the auctions right around the corner. In 219 T20 matches, he has 5528 runs, 40 half centuries and 2 centuries.
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will bring a new concept of substitute players this year. This concept will be introduced for the first time and if done well can be carried to IPL too. A similar concept of ‘X-Factor Player’ is used in the Big Bash League. A player can come in the 12th and 13th over and can replace any batsman or bowler that is yet to bat or bowl. The use of substitute players is completely choice based and not mandatory.
