BCCI to Have ‘Substitute’ Player in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
The Board of Control for Cricket in India is open to experimenting with something new in domestic cricket. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is set to introduce the concept of a substitute or impact player. This is generally used in other sports like football, baseball, basketball, etc. It will be the first time that this will come in use in cricket. The successful implementation of the impact/substitute will not only make it interesting for the viewers but also can be a make or break point of the game. The domestic tournament will start on October 11. Are you looking for legal betting sites in India on the go? If yes, read more here.
BCCI said in its note, “The concept is to allow one substitute player per team to take a more active part in a match. This would add a new tactical/strategic dimension to the game. A number of team sports allow teams to make tactical substitutes i.e. football, rugby, basketball, and baseball. The substitute is allowed to perform or participate like any other regular player.”

How will this ‘substitute’ player concept work?
One of the crucial things to remember is that irrespective of using a substitute player, only 11 members of any team will be on the field. When the substitute player is called up, someone from the team will have to go back to the dugout. Additionally, the team captains will have to mention their 4 substitute players during the toss. The team can bring the substitute player at any time in the game. They will have to inform the 4th umpire. However, once the substitute player has been called in, the player he has replaced cannot take part in the rest of the match.
The 10 over rule
In addition to the already existing set of rules for the substitute player, there is something known as the 10 over rule. It is often seen that due to rains, generally, the game resumes with reduced overs. In this situation, if the overs reduce to below 10 before the start of the game, the impact player cannot come in use. Nonetheless, the rule has an exception. If the overs are cut down in the middle of the batting team’s innings and they’ve already made use of impact player, the bowling team can make use of it too. However, if the batting team has not used the substitute player before the reduced overs, none of the sides will get to use it.
Will the IPL make use of this idea?
As of now, there is no official confirmation on this. But, after the end of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the experience of the players the concept may come into consideration. Stay tuned for our 100% FREE cricket tips and match guides from our professional betting tipsters.
