The Surrey County Cricket Club on March 20, Monday, confirmed that Curran has suffered a stress fracture of the lumbar spine which will keep him out of action for an indefinite period of time. The club also revealed that his recovery will be monitored by the medical team and he will undergo rehabilitation at Surrey only.

“Tom Curran returned early from the Pakistan Super League and scans have shown he has suffered a stress fracture of the lumbar spine. Tom will be out for a period of time whilst he recovers and undergoes rehabilitation at Surrey,” Surrey, his county, said in a statement.

Earlier this month, Islamabad United announced that Surrey’s white-ball specialist was leaving the competition after playing five games in the recently concluded eighth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Before that, he was part of the Desert Vipers’ run to the ILT20 final. As soon as he returned back home to England, he went for scans and the results of the scans revealed that there is a new back injury. While informing regarding his injury, Surrey didn’t give any time frame as to when Curran can make his on-field return.

Last year also, he was suffering from a stress fracture to his lower back that forced him to miss nearly seven months of action in 2022, including the first half of the county summer. On Wednesday (February 1), Surrey announced that Curran had decided to step away from red-ball cricket. Curran has decided to take an indefinite break from the longest version of the game, the club said in a statement.

This comes as a major blow for Surrey as Curran has been an integral part of the club across formats. The seasoned campaigner has bagged 193 wickets in 171 T20 matches in his career at an impressive strike rate of 17.4. The right-handed batter is no mug with the bat either as the Englishman has amassed 1316 runs at a strike rate of over 138.
