Shoaib Malik’s Bangladesh Premier League Agreement Terminated Amidst Match-Fixing Suspicions

Shoaib Malik’s Bangladesh Premier League journey with Fortune Barishal came to an end due to suspicions of match-fixing. The franchise, led by owner Mizanur Rahman, decided to sever ties with the Pakistan all-rounder after he played three matches in the Mirpur leg of the BPL 2024.

Confirmed by Rahman, the development saw Shoaib Malik being replaced by his former Pakistan teammate Ahmed Shehzad on Friday. Shehzad affirmed that Malik would not return to the side for the remainder of the tournament.

The suspicion of match-fixing arose when Malik bowled three no-balls in the same over against Khulna Riders. This led to the team owners terminating his contract, especially after Malik only scored five runs off six balls in that game.

In his initial matches, Malik had a mixed performance, taking a wicket and contributing an unbeaten 17 in a win over Rangpur Riders. However, the no-ball incident during the game against Khulna Tigers on January 22 raised concerns. Despite this, Malik made a comeback to play against Comila Victorians on January 23 in Mirpur. Shoaib Malik’s overall performance in the Bangladesh Premier League was modest, managing just 29 runs across three innings. This marked his first competitive action since December of the previous year.
