The first-ever hat-trick in the Women’s Premier League by Issy Wong helped Mumbai Indians Women to move to the final and set up a mouth-watering clash against Delhi Capitals Women. These were the two best teams in the tournament and were also pre-tournament favorites. UP Warriorz Women tried their best but had no answer against Wong’s bowling and Natalia Sciver-Brunt’s batting whose unbeaten 72 took Mumbai Indians to 182/4.

Sent into bat, Mumbai had a good start as their openers Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews maintained their form. However, none of them could play the long innings like Sciver-Brunt who held the Mumbai Innings together and other players around her. All the Mumbai batters reached double-figure and there were some handy contributions like 29 from Amelia Kerr, 26 from Matthews, and 21 from Bhatia. Nat Sciver-Brunt batted for just 38 balls to score 72 with 9 fours and 2 sixes.

The Warriorz did not have a good start. They lost Shweta Sehrawat in the second over and then lost Alyssa Healy and Tahlia McGrath within the Powerplay. It was a big setback for them and they could not recover. Kiran Navgire tried her best with a 27-ball 43 but her dismissal by Wong triggered a collapse as Wong went on to dismiss Simran Shaikh and Sophie Ecclestone in the next two deliveries to complete her hat-trick. The Warriorz were 84/7 at that stage and eventually all out in the 18th over for just 110. Wong finished with the figures of 4 for 15.

Score: Mumbai Indians 182/4 beat UP Warriorz 110 by 72 runs

Player of the Match: Nat Sciver-Brunt (72* off 38, 1/21)

We catch Sciver on 6, the game could be ours. We went with our strength, backed ourselves with ball in hand. We were just outplayed tonight, especially with the bat. Can’t comment too much, will probably be fined (the catch from Anjali that was given not out). Anjali claimed it, and it looked good in real time. Our strength in this whole tournament has been we’ve hung in there. We haven’t played our best cricket a lot of the time. I’m really proud of this group. Not many people were talking about the UP Warriors (as favourites).

The two best teams have made it to the final. I’m proud of our group to have a crack. I think for our group – it wasn’t necessarily about winning the trophy in year one. Would’ve been nice, don’t get me wrong and that’s what we were trying to do. We wanted to lift the trophy on Sunday. But it’s not all about that. What we’ve got at this franchise is something special, and I think we can build on over the next few years. I’m sure we’ll sit back and review the season we’ve had and some areas we’ll need to fix up or get a player to fill a gap. There’s so many talented players in our group and Kiran is one of them. Hits the ball for fun and hits the ball a long way. I’m looking forward to what she can do in Indian colours in the near future.

Harmanpreet Kaur, the Mumbai Indians captain said,

We have a decent bowling wicket, we know anyone can come and take wickets. Wongy is always excited to bowl, today she was always there and very happy. She is someone who can take us through any game [on Nat Sciver-Brunt]. We have young girls doing well on the field, we have always spoken about getting some run-outs and that was a crucial point in the game. They have a very positive energy and are happy to have them. They are a very good side and we just want to enjoy the final.
