Gujarat Giants actually won the toss and also brought in Laura Wolvaardt who joined the team as a replacement for Beth Mooney. However, Kapp was on top of her game from the beginning and picked up a wicket in the first over of the match. In her next over she took the big scalps of Wolvaardt and Ashleigh Gardner. The Giants were already 15 for 3 and could never recover. They lost two more wickets in the next two overs as Harleen Deol was also dismissed by Kapp after a 14-ball 20. There was some late-order resistance from Kim Garth who top-scored with 32 and remained unbeaten. Kapp finished with 5/15 from her four overs as the Giants trudged along to 105/9 in 20 overs.

Delhi Capitals started the chase with 14 runs in the first two overs. However, from there on it picked pace, Shafali Verma hit three boundaries in the third over as it went for 16 and then it was followed by a 23-runs over and then two 15-runs over as the Capitals raced to 87 for no loss at the end of the Powerplay. Verma was on 62 off 23 balls at that stage, earlier reaching her fifty in 19 balls. The onslaught continued and eventually, the Capitals completed the chase in an astonishing 7.1 overs without losing a wicket. Verma remained unbeaten on 76 off 28 as Kapp was the player-of-the-match for her fifer.

Score: Delhi Capitals 107/0 beat Gujarat Giants 105/9 by 10 wickets

WPL 2023: Captains speak

The losing captain of Gujarat Giants, Sneh Rana said,

It’s completely okay. Girls did the best they can do. So it’s fine. Pitch was a bit skiddy. It was a good decision (at the toss) because the ball was coming on well. Hand is fine, hope it gets better. Shafali was fantastic tonight. All those shots were incredible.

The winning captain Meg Lanning of Delhi Capitals said,

That was a pretty cool show to watch from the other end. I was just cheerleading from the other end. Some of the best hitting I’ve seen. I said just keep it simple. Stay still and hit the ball straight. I’m still to get over it. It seemed like a new ball wicket. We just had to make sure what we had to do. Shafali didn’t make it look very difficult. Those sort of chases can be tricky if you go into a shell. Kapp’s natural length is one that works on a wicket like this. She was excellent today, I love watching her bowl. She was frustrated with her performances so far – she shouldn’t have been.
