Mumbai Indians Struggle

They started by losing their captain in no time that invited the Baby AB, Dewald Brevis. The young South African batter played a beautiful cameo of 19-ball 29 and set the tone of the match right for Mumbai. However, he was followed by Ishan Kishan (14) soon and Mumbai Indians were reduced to 55/3 at the end of 11 overs.

Mumbai Indians needed recovery and Suryakumar Yadav along with Tilak Varma led the same. He scored his half-century and stitched 83 runs together with Varma to take Mumbai Indians to a better situation. Yadav was dismissed for 52 but Varma remained unbeaten with 27-ball 38. Kieron Pollard played the last five balls of the innings and took 22 runs from the same. The final Pat Cummins oversaw a wicket and 23 runs that took Mumbai Indians score to 161/4.

KKR VS MI: Kolkata Knight Riders innings

The chase was difficult. Kolkata Knight Riders lost Ajinkya Rahane for 11-ball 7 followed by the middle-order batters. Shreyas Iyer, Sam Billings, Nitish Rana- all of them tried to add quick scores but struggled. They ended up throwing wickets one after another. With 83/4 in 11.5 overs and Venkatesh Iyer at the other end, KKR fans hoped Andre Russell to do the magic again. But Russell was gone for a 5-ball 11. When all hopes were finished, Pat Cummins walked in.

Cummins came and started hitting from the fourth ball he faced. The smacking continued.  At the end of the 15th over, KKR’s target was 35 runs off 30 deliveries. Cummins went berserk and smashed four sixes and one four to win the match with 24 balls remaining. Venkatesh Iyer remained not out on 41-ball 50 as Cummins registered the joint-fastest IPL fifty off 14 balls. Earlier the feat was recorded by KL Rahul in 2018.

“Extraordinary! I couldn’t believe the way he (Cummins) was hitting the ball. Because yesterday in the nets, he was getting bowled now and then. I was batting in the nets beside him then. During the timeout, the plan was for Venky to drop anchor and tell Pat to just swing at everything because that’s what he was doing before too.”

In the post-match presentation, the KKR captain said,

It did not just help KKR seal a memorable win over the arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022. It also helped them significantly improve their Net Run Rate and took them to the top of the IPL Points Table.
