The three-match T20 series between India and Afghanistan is all set to start on Thursday. This game will be played at the PCA Stadium in Mohali, with both teams searching for answers to some big questions. Team India, which has not won an ICC tournament since 2013, is looking to find the best pool of backup players that can do well in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Team India has called back Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Rohit will be leading the squad in the series. Virat will miss the first game and will be back for the remaining two matches. The game on Thursday will be the first match for Rohit Sharma since the semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia against England. It’s been almost 14 months since he led India in the shorter format.

IND vs AFG: Rohit Sharma on verge of breaking MS Dhoni’s massive record in T20Is

Rohit Sharma has led India in 51 T20Is so far. Under his captaincy, India has won 39 matches and suffered defeats in 12 matches. Rohit has led India to the second-most T20I wins as a captain. The record for the most T20I wins by an Indian captain belongs to MS Dhoni. Dhoni led India to 41 wins out of 72 matches, along with 28 defeats, 1 tie, and two games ending in no-results.

Rohit has a golden chance to go past Dhoni. If India can win the series 3-0, then Rohit’s tally will increase to 42, and he will become India’s most successful T20 captain. On the other hand, with this, he will also become the joint-most successful T20 captain overall. Asghar Afghan (AFG), Eoin Morgan (ENG), Babar Azam (PAK), and Rwanda’s Clinton Rubagumya have led their respective countries to 42 T20 wins.

Hence, Rohit has a golden chance to script history. On the other hand, the Indian captain is just five sixes away from hitting the most sixes as a T20 captain. Rohit has hit 82 sixes in 51 matches, while Morgan holds the record with 86 sixes in 72 matches. The first game will start at 7 p.m. in the evening in Mohali.
