Shubman Gill reflects on his failure against Pakistan
Indian opener Shubman Gill candidly discussed his debut encounter against Pakistan in his international career, describing it as a unique and intense experience. Last week, India faced off against the Men in Green in their 2023 Asia Cup opener, but the match was ultimately washed out due to rain after the first innings.
Gill, making his first appearance for India against Pakistan, was thrust into the high-intensity atmosphere, filled with emotions and adrenaline, typical of an India-Pakistan clash as he opened the batting. However, the pressure seemed to affect the 24-year-old, as he managed only ten runs from 32 deliveries.
In a press conference before India’s upcoming encounter with Pakistan in the Super Four stage, Gill reflected on the significance of facing their arch-rivals before the impending ODI World Cup, considering it a valuable learning experience. He mentioned,
“Playing Pakistan was a unique experience. It was my first game, and there was added pressure. But every game at the World Cup carries its own pressure, and getting accustomed to it here against Pakistan is beneficial for us.”
Rohit prefers to take on the bowlers: Gill
Gill praised Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and their successful opening partnership, highlighting their contrasting batting styles as the key to their effectiveness. In their previous outing against Nepal, the duo formed their third opening stand of over 140 runs, leading India to a comfortable 10-wicket victory and securing their spot in the Super Four.
“He is someone who prefers to take on the bowlers. I tend to play more ground shots, and we complement each other. Because we have different styles, it can be challenging for the opposition,” Gill remarked about Rohit.
Despite his struggles against Pakistan and recent fluctuations in form, Gill has made a remarkable start to his ODI career. In India’s previous match against Nepal, the elegant batsman achieved the distinction of being the fastest to reach 1,500 ODI runs, boasting an impressive average of 64.08 and a strike rate exceeding 102.
