While writing in his column, Sunil Gavaskar raised concerns over the growth of young Indian cricketers under foreign captains and coaches. He also explained the importance of the role played by Indian captains and coaches in the IPL by giving examples from IPL 2023.

It’s not easy for overseas stars to think like those not as gifted as they were: Sunil Gavaskar

“These players have had such superior skills and a magnificent temperament that it’s not easy for them to think like those not as gifted as they were in both the technique and temperament departments,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

“Often, the language is a barrier for a young, budding Indian player who comes from the interiors and may not be conversant in English to understand. That probably explains why players like Yash Dhull, Priyam Garg, and Sarfaraz Khan, to name just three, have made little or no progress, ” the veteran cricketer further explained the reason behind his comment.

The league stage of IPL 2023 concluded on May 21 as Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians qualified for the playoffs. All the four qualified teams have an Indian captain who has handled the leadership role perfectly.

On the other hand, Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad finished the IPL 2023 league stage at 9th and 10th position respectively. The DC side was led by David Warner in the absence of their regular skipper Rishabh Pant while former Australian batter Ricky Ponting is their head coach.

Sunrisers Hyderabad was led by Aiden Markram and former West Indies batter Brian Lara is the head coach of the side. Both DC and SRH failed miserably in IPL 2023 and a few talented Indian players couldn’t perform well while representing these franchises.

At the same time, young players like Rinku Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel did well under Indian captains. Sunil Gavaskar also praised Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans players for performing well under Indian coaches.
