On Tuesday, the world witnessed something incredible that cannot be described in words. It was an insane batting display from Glenn Maxwell, who played probably the best ODI knock in the second inning. Maxwell was at his absolute best, and he went on to break some unbelievable records in his innings. Chasing the target of 292 runs, Australia were struggling at 91/7 in 18.3 overs with not much batting left to come.

But what happened next will be remembered for a long time. Glenn Maxwell took the responsibility on his shoulders and played a once-in-a-lifetime inning to take his team to victory. He went on to become the first Australian player to reach the 200-run mark in an ODI inning. Maxwell remained unbeaten on 201 off just 128 balls, with 10 sixes and 25 boundaries.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Glenn Maxwell scripts history and registers his name in the record book

Glenn Maxwell missed Australia’s last game due to an injury. He also struggled during his innings because of hamstring pain and cramps. But despite all the pain, he kept hitting boundaries without much use for his feet. There were two catches dropped of him which became costly and Maxwell snatched the victory from the jaws of defeat. He added 203 runs with Pat Cummins for the 8th wicket, who scored only 12 runs.

Glenn Maxwell broke a number of records during his inning. He became the first player from his country to score an ODI double hundred. This was only the third time that a player scored a double century in a World Cup game. Martin Guptill and Chris Gayle did it at the 2015 World Cup. Apart from this, Maxwell completed his double hundred off 128 balls, which is now the second-fastest ever.

Ishan Kishan scored the fastest double hundred off 126 balls against Bangladesh in December 2022. Australia made 293/7 in 46.5 overs and registered their highest successful run-chase in World Cup history. This is also the highest score for a non-opener in ODI cricket. Maxwell hit 10 sixes and surpassed AB de Villiers (37) to smashed third most World Cup sixes (43) now. The 202-run partnership between Maxwell and Cummins is now the highest ODI stand for the 7th wicket or below.
