Darren Gough, the former English pacer, has opined that Umran Malik is in India’s squad for the upcoming marquee event T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Malik showed glimpses of his high-end pace in three matches he played in IPL 2021. He was subsequently retained by SRH before IPL 2022 and made a name for himself as a middle-overs enforcer in IPL 2022. In the middle-overs phase (overs 7-16), Umran Malik picked up 19 wickets at an average of 19.8 with a strike rate of just 13.9. The speedster bowled about 90% of his total deliveries in this phase. Even though he was a bit expensive on a few occasions, Malik was mighty imposing with his pace and bounce.

Malik has been the talk of the town since IPL 2022. He rushed batters on multiple occasions and bowled as a strike bowler with attacking fieldsets. Some batsmen looked often uncomfortable while facing him as he clocked the 150 kph mark quite regularly. While speaking to Cricket.com’s official YouTube channel, Darren Gough said,

Anybody [Umran Malik] who bowls that speed gets into my squad. On the pitches in Australia, you might just need that extra bit of pace to shock the opposition.

Gough also showered praises on Jasprit Bumrah by calling him as the “best all-format bowler in the world”, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar for his ability to pick up new wickets. The former English pacer also said that Mohammed Siraj has impressed him. Gough finally picked Bumrah, Bhuvi, Siraj and Umran as his choices for India’s fast-bowling options for India in the T20 World Cup.

CricTips Opinion:

Umran was fast-tracked into India’s set-up as he received his maiden national call-up for the home T20 series against South Africa, and the following away series in Ireland and England. He played a couple of matches against Ireland and the third T20I against England.

However, Umran didn’t fare well as he averaged 56 with an economy of 12.44 across three matches. While he bowled just one over and conceded 14 runs on his T20I debut, he was hammered for 42 and 56 runs in his following games against Ireland and England respectively.

The 22-year-old didn’t find a place in India’s squad for the West Indies tour. So, Umran isn’t probably in India’s scheme of things for the T20 World Cup as of now. And, understandably so, because he seems a bit too raw for the highest level at the moment. While he is an exciting talent, Umran has a tendency of going for plenty of runs. He needs at least one more IPL season and domestic cricket under his belt to be bought back into India’s set-up.
