IPL 2022: Four Most Weird Team Selection Decisions
1. Abdul Samad (Sunrisers Hyderabad):
Abdul Samad, who was retained as an uncapped player by SRH, was dropped from the playing XI just after the first two matches. The Sunrisers’ management, after losing both games, panicked and lost their trust in the youngster. The right-handed batter scored just 4 runs in the first match and bagged a duck in the second game.
It’s quite tough to perform the finishing role, particularly for an inexperienced batter and SRH didn’t help Samad’s case. Samad has been continuously underutilised by SRH. In the previous season, he seldom got opportunities to take his time at the start of the innings. His entry points were often late and he didn’t get enough support from the batter at the other end as well.
2. Tim David (Mumbai Indians):
Tim David, who bought for a whopping sum of 8.5 crores INR, was also dropped after a couple of opportunities. Mumbai Indians, generally known for backing their players, were not patient enough with David. He had performed in the other T20 leagues and came with a reputation as a big hitter. Mumbai themselves recognised David’s excellence as indicated by his price tag but didn’t persist with him. Mumbai continued to bench him for the next six games while their batting was regularly letting them down. The right-handed batter made a strong comeback as he scored 173 runs at an average of 57.7 with a strike rate of 230.7 after getting his spot back in the side. That being said, Mumbai seem to have got a brutal middle-order batter for the future.
3. Shivam Dube (Chennai Super Kings):
Shivam Dube had a good start to this season and there were the talks of CSK bringing the best out of Dube. In his first 8 matches of the season, the southpaw had accumulated 247 runs at an average of 35 with a strike rate of 159.4. He had played three fine knocks: 49 (30) vs LSG, 57 (30) vs PBKS and 95 (46) vs RCB.
However, MS Dhoni, in his first match as a captain of the season, dropped Dube, who was arguably their best batter of the season by then. Shivam was reselected in the XI after being dropped for two matches. He played three matches and was dropped in CSK’s last match of the season again! While CSK were probably trying the other players in the last game, Dube shouldn’t have been dropped in the first place.
4. The wicket-keeper conundrum (Kolkata Knight Riders):
KKR started the season with both Sheldon Jackson and Sam Billings in their playing XI but dropped the former after a couple of failures. Billings continued to be the wicket-keeper for the next three games but he was out in the next two matches in the illness. Jackson played those two games and was dropped again.
Billings played one match after recovering and was dropped for Baba Indrajith. Indrajith played three matches and he was also dropped later, and Jackson came back. Jackson played one game and finally, Sam Billings played the last two matches. That’s just too much changing and chopping for a single spot. This was majorly a result of KKR’s poor auction strategy as they didn’t buy a reliable wicketkeeper-batter for their first-choice XI.
