MI would have wanted to perform better in 2022 as they failed to qualify for playoffs this season. Their campaign hasn’t started on a positive note. Mumbai will try to bounce bank and the captain Rohit Sharma needs to step up with the bat. Here we take a look at three reasons behind their failure in IPL 2022.
IPL 2022 LIVE: Why have Mumbai Indians struggled so far?
1. Unreliable Bowling Attack:
Mumbai Indians’ bowling attack is not reliable. Jasprit Bumrah is an exceptional bowler and Tymal Mills has also been decent so far. However, the rest of the bowling attack doesn’t inspire enough confidence. Mumbai Indians bought Jofra Archer aiming for long-term success while sacrificing their performance in this season.

Basil Thampi is averaging over 25 with an economy of 9.5 this season. He is a backup pacer but MI have started with him in the XI. Daniel Sams has a terrible record in IPL: 2 wickets at an average of 146 with an economy of over 10!
Murugan Ashwin is not a great choice to be the leading spinner in an IPL XI. He needs a bit of cushion of bowling in a strong bowling attack. So, MI will need to fine-tune the rest of the attack. They could bring Riley Meredith and Jaydev Unadkat in for Daniel Sams and Basil Thampi respectively.
2. Lack of balance in the XI:

Once Mumbai Indians had both Krunal Pandya and Hardik Pandya in their XI, who provided immense balance to their side. However, as Krunal’s returns went downhill and Hardik’s fitness was a concern in 2021, Mumbai struggled to find balance. Their issues have got worse this season.
Sams is playing as an all-rounder, however, he isn’t good enough to make it to the XI. MI can play Sanjay Yadav as an all-rounder at No. 7, depending on how he is doing in the nets. Sanjay is a middle-order batsman and left-arm orthodox spinner. Including Sanjay in the XI will also Mumbai to play Meredith for Thampi and boost their bowling attack. Fabian Allen is also another option.
Kieron Pollard bowled against Rajasthan Royals but in his last over, against Hetmyer & Buttler, was quite damaging for Mumbai. Pollard isn’t a regular bowling option so the lack of balance is likely to be a persistent issue for Rohit Sharma’s team, however, if their first bowlers perform well, it won’t be a big problem.
3. Not Capitalising on the Strong Positions:
Mumbai Indians were in a winnable position in all of their games. But, they lost the plot towards the end of the match. In their first match against Delhi Capitals, they were on their way to victory but a superb stand between Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel, of 75 runs off just 30 balls after being 72/5, took the game away from them.
In their second match against Rajasthan Royals, they were again in a strong position while chasing, thanks to a solid partnership between Ishan Kishan and Tilak Verma. But they collapsed from 121/2 to 136/6 and lost the game.
Pat Cummins scored the joint-fastest IPL fifty, off 14 balls, and snatched the victory from Mumbai Indians. KKR were chasing 162 and the party seemed over for them as Andre Russell got out at 101/5. But, Cummins’ incredible effort against Jasprit Bumrah and co. did the job for KKR.
