CSK’s road to playoffs qualification has got extremely hard now. With two new teams coming in, the competition for top-4 spots in the points table was always going to rise. According to Criclytics by Cricket.com, CSK’s qualification chances, which were 51% before the season, have dropped to 4% after three defeats now. Here, we take a look at some of the key reasons behind CSK’s failure in IPL 2022 so far.
IPL 2022 Live: CSK’s Failure This Season, Yet to Win a Match
1. Lack of Runs from the Top-Order:
CSK batsmen haven’t fired in IPL 2022 yet. Seven batsmen have batted in the top-six for CSK so far, and five of them average 21.5 or less. Ruturaj Gaikwad has scored just two runs as he has stumbled to some fine new-ball bowling. Ambati Rayudu, who is averaging just 18.3 with a strike rate of under 95, hasn’t got the going as well.
The skipper Ravindra Jadeja hasn’t been at his best either. Jadeja has scored just 43 runs with a strike rate of 107.5 in three innings. CSK lost 4 and 5 wickets within the first 10 overs against KKR & PBKS respectively. Looking for more IPL Cricket betting sites for this season? Find them here.
CSK’s strategy was based on utilizing the batting depth. However, the batting depth isn’t very useful without a solid foundation from the main batsmen. So, the top-order batsmen, particularly Ruturaj, need to perform better in the upcoming matches.
2. Poor Bowling Attack:
CSK couldn’t assemble a strong bowling attack in IPL 2022 auction. Their issues got even bigger as Deepak Chahar is unavailable for most of the tournament. Apart from the mediocre batting performances, CSK bowlers have been expectedly poor.
Their bowling attack has conceded runs at an economy of over 9 so far. And, they have failed to pick up early wickets as well. In three matches, the CSK bowlers have scalped just one wicket in the powerplay and four in the first 10 overs of the innings.
Dwaine Pretorius has impressed with his defensive bowling so far, as he has managed to bowl away from the batters’ arc decently in the slog overs. However, CSK needs more wickets from their powerplay pacers and middle-overs spinners.
3. Victim of Brilliant Individual Performances:
CSK has been on the receiving end of some excellent individual performances in the competition so far.
KKR’s Umesh Yadav bowled a brilliant powerplay and pushed CSK into deep trouble. And, the rest of the damage was done by the spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy.
While CSK was ahead in the second match against Lucknow Super Giants, Evin Lewis played a superb knock of 55 runs off just 23 balls to take his side over the line. Ravi Bishnoi also bowled an amazing spell in difficult conditions in that match. Punjab Kings’ Liam Livingstone produced a brilliant all-round performance to complete the trinity. Varun Arora also bowled a fine spell to cause the early damage with the ball.
