IPL 2022: The Indian side didn’t have a great T20 World Cup 2021 as they were disqualified in the group stage. One of the main reasons behind their early exit was their poor batting performance in the first two matches against Pakistan and New Zealand. So, the selectors and the management will be warier regarding the batting unit. For today’s IPL match predictions and updates for the upcoming 2022 Season, check out here.

Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rishabh Pant seem to be top-five as of now. While Hardik Pandya’s form and fitness will decide the No. 6 spot, India has to finalize the backups. India would want to be flexible with the team changes for a couple of spots, depending on the form.

1. Virat Kohli:

A bit of uncertainty is revolving around Virat Kohli’s batting role in this IPL season, due to RCB’s complex batting setup, and Kohli’s own recent T20 returns. The right-handed batsman has been unable to maintain a good scoring rate in the middle overs and struggled against spinners, especially away-turners, in particular.

In all T20s since 2020, the former RCB and Indian captain has accumulated runs at a mediocre strike rate of 114 with a poor balls-per-boundary (BpB) ratio of above 12 in the middle overs (7-16). His strike rate drops to 104.70 and the BpB ratio shoots up to 14 against spinners in this timeframe.

The Indian team management would be pleased if Kohli hits enough boundaries in each of his innings. He started well in many innings recently but failed to maintain tempo later. As far as the World Cup in Australia is concerned, Kohli’s ability to maneuver gaps against high-end pace will be useful in particular.

2. Ishan Kishan:

Ishan Kishan has played a handful of T20Is and has a strong case to be in India’s squad for the mega event. The wicketkeeper-batsman provides flexibility to the team. Kishan adds the variety of an LHB in India’s RHB-heavy top-order. His game against quality bowling and on tricky decks is a work in progress.

Ishan is likely to open with Rohit Sharma in this IPL season. The youngster enjoys the cushion of fielding restrictions while batting at the top of the order. So, more than the overall returns, the Indian management and selectors should keep an eye on his performance against quality bowling attacks, particularly fast-bowlers, and in tricky situations. 3. Sanju Samson:

Like Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson can also multiple roles. One of the minor differences between both players is: while Kishan has an advantage against left-arm orthodox spinners and leg-spinners, Sanju is a better batsman against pace-bowling.

Samson has got a wide range of shots against fast-bowlers. Along with the classical strokeplay in his armoury, Samson has got a stable hitting base against pacers. Although the express fast-bowlers can test him with well-directed bouncers, he is skilled enough to do a fine job on other fronts.

The Rajasthan Royals-skipper has displayed a safer approach to innings construction in recent times. And, with his excellent acceleration skills, a bit of sedate start shouldn’t be a big issue. Rajasthan have plenty of top-order batters into the mix, so it would be interesting to see what role Sanju plays. He is likely to bat at No. 4.

4. Shreyas Iyer:

Shreyas Iyer was ousted from India’s main squad for the previous T20 World Cup. His T20 game has been under the scanner. However, Iyer’s recent excellent form has made his case stronger. The right-handed batsman has batted with a better intent in recent time, so that’s a positive.

However, the KKR skipper will have to produce improve his IPL returns. Shreyas, who previously played for Delhi Capitals, had a strike rate of 118 with a balls-per-boundary ratio of close to 8 in the IPL since 2019. Iyer is unlikely to have it easy because of KKR’s substandard batting setup. The rest of the batsmen might not complement him well.

As far as the mega event is concerned, Iyer might not enjoy the bouncy conditions in Australia. So, the selectors need to factor in that and keep an eye on his boundary-ball percentage.
