Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja were the star performers for India. However, there weren’t enough positives for the visitors, apart from Dimuth Karunaratne’s high-class century, and a few decent short passages for their spinners.
India has now won as many as 15 consecutive home Test series. While maintaining this incredible streak, they have lost just two matches. India has an extremely strong Test side for the Asian conditions, and their bowling attack has so much quality and an amazing depth.

IND vs SL: Three takeaways for India from the Test series:
1. Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer leave Shubman Gill behind in the pecking order:
Before the start of the Test series, there was a fair bit of speculation regarding the replacements of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. There were also some voices of dropping Mayank Agarwal after a middling series in South Africa. Looking for more Cricket betting apps? Find here on our site.
Shubman was out of action in the Test series in England and South Africa due to injuries, while playing the home Test against New Zealand in between. Now, Gill, who was once ahead of even KL Rahul, has lost his opening spot.
After a good start to his Test career in Australia, the pacers tested Gill with the full-length deliveries. The young prodigy got stuck on the crease and was found out against the moving ball on several occasions. With Gill returning to the squad, India could’ve made a long-term move by demoting him in the middle-order.
However, India went ahead with Iyer and Vihari, and both were pretty impressive in this Test, especially Iyer. Vihari’s inclusion, at No. 3, wasn’t unexpected because of his compact technique and his gameplay is also similar to Pujara.
Iyer is also a good option in home Tests, and how he copes against fast-bowlers in overseas conditions remains to be seen. The right-hander has a strong temperament with a give-his-all attitude. Now, Gill will have to wait for his chances and utilize them to the fullest.
2. Virat Kohli’s form: a concern
Virat Kohli’s batting fluency has been missing for quite some time now, particularly at the start of his innings. Even though the former Indian captain has accumulated some tough runs in his rough patch, his consistency has dipped, apart from the lack of big runs. The trend continued in this Test series as well as he finished the series with an average of 27 without any 50+ score.
Virat’s game against spin has been a problem for a while now, be it the scoring rate in white-ball cricket or the dismissal rate in Test cricket. While being dismissed 10 times against spinners in Tests since 2018, Kohli has been averaging 27.5 with a balls-per-dismissal ratio of under 60.
Admittedly, the pitches in this series weren’t productive for run-scoring, and an out-of-form batsman would be better off with some leeway. However, Kohli could have still displayed a better application. He has been repeating some of his mistakes a bit too frequently, and the all-time great needs to regain his mojo at the earliest.
3. India needs better pitches in home Tests:
The pitches in this Test series were quite slow, lacked bounce, and provided turn from Day 1. In the Test series against England as well, India’s home decks were under scanner. While every team utilises its home advantage and plays to its strength, India will have to take care of it going ahead.
As India’s batting unit is going under a transition, better batting decks will be useful for the development of unestablished batsmen. India’s bowling attack is already so good, and as long as the decks aren’t complete highways, it shouldn’t matter much. Better batting decks, along with a few tricky ones, will ensure that batsmen maintain their capability to play long innings which is an important aspect of Test cricket.
