Indian batsmen have often been criticized for their strike rates in T20 Internationals. For a long, they had been treating T20s as a shortened form of ODIs. But with power-hitting and strike rates revolutionizing the shortest format of the game, India seems to have adopted a more aggressive batting philosophy. Shreyas Iyer echoed the same after India lost their second consecutive match against South Africa. Looking for trusted betting sites in India? We got you covered! Shreyas Iyer explains India’s batting template

“Our main aim is obviously the World Cup, so we have to see to it that we plan towards it. So we have that sort of mindset where we are completely free and not thinking about anything else. These are the actual games where we can practise what we were lacking in the past. That’s what we keep discussing in the team meeting as well. No matter what happens, whatever plans we discuss in the team meeting, we have to execute those. Even if we fail, we will learn from that and grow as a player and grow as a team. So that’s more important till we reach Australia.”

Shreyas Iyer

It has been clear that Indian batsmen are looking to take on bowlers a lot more in this series. This is a big improvement from the times when the top three used to take their time to settle in, leaving the middle order to do too much in the end. According to Iyer, the plan is to “keep going no matter what happens”. He further said, “Even if we keep losing wickets, it’s our game plan and in the future too, we will go in with the same mindset. We will back ourselves and back our instincts.” Browse the latest cricket betting odds on a wide range of markets and learn how betting odds work and give you the best cricket rates online.

While this approach worked for India in the first T20I – where they posted 211/4 – Indian batsmen were found wanting on a tricky Cuttack pitch on Sunday. They eventually finished on 148/6, which was not enough in the end. Except for Ishan Kishan, Dinesh Karthik, and Iyer himself, every batsman struggled. Four of them finished with a strike rate under 100.

Speaking about India’s performance with the bat in the second match, Iyer felt that they could have judged the pitch better. He added that they could have scored those crucial 10-15 extra runs if they had batted more sensibly. “I feel if something we could have done on this wicket is playing until 11 to 15 overs,” said Iyer.

Iyer also broke down the team’s decision to hold back Karthik, despite being in sensational form. Axar Patel walked in ahead of Karthik when the fourth wicket fell in the 13th over of India’s innings. While he managed only 10 runs off 11 balls, Iyer backed the decision saying that they wanted to send in Karthik in the death overs, a phase that he excelled in during IPL 2022.

India and South Africa play the third T20I on Tuesday, June 14 in Vishakhapatnam.
