A total of four packages are going under the hammer in today’s e-auction. Following is the breakdown of each package:

  • Package A consists of TV rights solely for the Indian subcontinent.
  • Package B meanwhile comprises of the digital rights, again for the Indian subcontinent only.
  • Package C contains the digital rights of some selected 18 matches per season (including the playoffs). This too is limited to the Indian subcontinent only.
  • Package D caters to the TV as well as digital rights for the Rest of the World.

Package C – the Special Package – comprises of 18 matches during a 74-match IPL season. For every additional 10 matches during a season, the number of matches in the package will rise by two. This implies that the package will contain 20 and 22 matches for a season of 84 and 94 matches respectively.

Per Match Value For TV

The value of TV rights has already crossed INR 100 CR per IPL match. It has not yet been disclosed who has bid what. Major broadcasting companies like Disney Star, Sony, Zee and Viacom are battling it out in today’s auction along with Reliance.

The IPL media rights e-auction started at 11 am IST in Mumbai on Sunday, 12 June. There is no scheduled end of the event as it will be continued to the next day if required. The highest bids will be flashed on the screen without disclosing the names of the bidders. According to Cricinfo: Each of the four packages has a separate per match base price. Bidders will need to list their quote on a per match basis. Once the highest bid is determined for individual packages, the cumulative base price amount for five years will be calculated.

For the previous cycle, Star had paid a sum of INR 16,347.5 CR (US$ 2.55 billion approx. then) to obtain the media rights of the global cricketing event. This gave them the rights for the 2018-22 cycle.
