The governing council met in person after a gap of two years. They realized that the concept of the Women’s IPL has potential and deserves encouragement. There is a substantial push from the sponsors for the Women’s T20 league and it can be used to materialize the Women’s IPL. Governing Council members have decided that the existing franchises will be asked if they can have a women’s team as well. Once that option is exhausted, the offer will be tendered for outside parties to own the franchise.

Women’s cricket has grown in leaps and bounds in recent years. India’s run to the finals of the 2017 Cricket World Cup propelled the follower base of women’s cricket in India. The Indian Premier League is the biggest T20 league in the world. The BCCI is under unarticulated pressure to start a women’s on similar lines of the IPL. A top BCCI official has told sports website – Cricbuzz that it is the responsibility of the board to start a women’s league, irrespective of commercial returns from the tournament.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) have decided to start a three-team T20 league starting this year, alongside the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). India’s neighbor Pakistan’s cricket board has also announced similar plans. Cricket Australia (CA) already have Women’s Big Bash League (BBL).

The official further elaborated on the idea of the women’s IPL and said the board will explore the feasibility of a six-team league in the upcoming days.

“Obviously, running the event alongside the men’s IPL may not be possible. We may have to explore a window first. Besides, the details of the proposed event will be worked out,”
