Recollecting his first transfer ahead of IPL 2009 Uthappa revealed that he was forced to sign the transfer papers by “someone” from MI. The current CSK opener did not reveal the name.
In a conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube channel, Uthappa disclosed that he was one of the first cricketers to be transferred to the IPL. The unnamed person from MI made it clear to Uthappa that if he didn’t sign the transfer papers, he would have to settle on the MI bench.
“So, I was along with Zaheer Khan and Manish Pandey. I was one of the first people to be transferred in the IPL. For me, it became extremely difficult because my loyalties were completely laid out with MI at that point. It happened a month before the IPL and I refused to sign the transfer papers,” Uthappa said.

Uthappa went on to say that back then he was undergoing issues in his personal life and was battling “depression” when he moved from MI to RCB. As a result, he didn’t play well that season.

“I didn’t play well even for one game that season. The only game in which I did well was when I was dropped and picked again. I played thinking that I really needed to do something in this match. Someone from MI, I won’t name him, had told me that if I didn’t sign the transfer papers, I’d not get to play in the XI for MI,” Uthappa added further.
Uthappa, who has been playing since the 2008 season, has scored 3,686 runs in 196 games at an average of 27.98 and strike rate of 130.58.

Earlier, Rajasthan Royals (RR) spinner Yuzvendra Chahal also revealed disturbing details about his stint at MI. The current RR spinner narrated an incident, where a “very very drunk” fellow cricketer hung him from a balcony of the 15th floor of a Bengaluru hotel. This happened during IPL 2013 – the season when Chahal made his IPL debut.
MI bought Chahal ahead of IPL 2011. Following MI’s Champions League victory, MI’s Andrew Symonds and James Franklin tied Chahal’s hands and legs, gagged him, and locked him in a room as a prank.
Chahal revealed these incidents while speaking to Ashwin in a video that was shared by RR on social media. Here are more IPL betting tips and match guides from the experts.
