After enduring a torrid run in IPL 2020, the Chennai Super Kings scripted a remarkable turnaround in the following edition. They were the first team to be eliminated from the playoff race in 2020. Come next year, MS Dhoni and Co. became the first side to book their place in the playoffs. The management put faith in their players and it reaped rewards for them. CSK went on to lift the trophy for the fourth time in IPL history after beating Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs in the final.

Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad wreaked havoc with the bat and made a successful opening pair. Besides, the decision to send Moeen Ali at number three did wonders for them. Ali capitalized on the starts provided by the openers consistently. Chennai Super Kings were equally dangerous in the death overs. CSK had, in fact, the best run rate in the death overs, thanks to stellar cameos from Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. In the fast bowling department, Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar proved threatening and picked wickets consistently. Check our betwinner review here in our site.

CSK is one team which don’t believe in a lot of changing and chopping in the squad. However, unfortunately, ahead of the Mega Auction next year, they can only retain four players. Keeping in mind their success rate in the competition, they will be quite aware of which four players they would want to retain. However, that’s not something we are going to discuss in this article. Here we take a look at three players that CSK might target in the Mega Auction

Three players that CSK might target in the IPL 2022 Mega Auction

  1. Lockie Ferguson

Lockie Ferguson

CSK looked quite sorted in all departments in IPL 2021, however, there’s no denying the fact that they dearly missed a fast bowler who could bowl 140-150 clicks consistently. That’s one area that CSK would want to look at. The Yellow Army should look to buy the services of an express fast bowler and there couldn’t be a better bet than Lockie Ferguson.

Lockie Ferguson was nothing short of outstanding in the second leg of IPL 2021 while playing for KKR. In the absence of Pat Cummins, he got the opportunity to play all the matches in the second half of the tournament.

He bowled at a great pace and hit the right lengths consistently. He finished the season with 13 wickets in just 8 matches at an average of 17.23. With so many world-class players in KKR, it’s unlikely that Lockie Ferguson would be retained in the team. CSK is likely to splurge a hefty amount to include him in the side.

2. David Warner

David Warner

David Warner was the cornerstone for Sunrisers Hyderabad for many years. Under his leadership, SRH won its first title in 2016. The southpaw has scored the most runs for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.

However, he had a forgettable outing in the 2021 edition of the tournament. He scored 195 runs in 8 matches at an average of 24.37 and a strike rate of 107.73. His performance also had an impact on the team’s performance as they slumped to the bottom of the table. To make it worse, he was dropped from the side and Kane Williamson took over the captaincy duties.

If reports are to be believed, David Warner isn’t going to be retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad next year. Chennai Super Kings need someone who could lead the team after Dhoni’s retirement and there couldn’t be anyone better than David Warner for that role.

3. Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer has done a phenomenal job as a captain for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. He took over the captaincy from Gautam Gambhir midway during the 2018 edition of the tournament. He was retained as captain for next year as well. Under Iyer’s captaincy, Delhi Capitals reached the playoffs twice in 2019 and 2020. Check this top IPL betting sites for you to go with.

Before the start of the 2021 edition, Shreyas Iyer suffered a shoulder injury due to which he missed out the first half of the season. In his absence, Rishabh Pant led the side with great authority. Iyer made a comeback in the second half of the season but Delhi persisted with Rishabh Pant captain. Iyer told at that time that he respected Pant’s decision as captain.

“This is part of the decision-making from the franchise or whatever decision they took, I respect the fact and Rishabh is leading the side well from the start of the season and they thought that he should be continued till the season end and I completely respect the decision,” Iyer said back then.

As per reports, Delhi are keen to continue with Rishabh Pant as captain for next year. It has also been learned that Shreyas Iyer isn’t interested to continue with the franchise as he is looking for a leadership role. CSK would be more than happy to have him in the side. Iyer would strengthen the middle-order and can also take on the captaincy role if needed.
