Pat Cummins Backs David Warner as Captain for ODI Format
After Aaron Finch announced his retirement from the ODIs, there have been discussions on who will be the new captain. Amidst all the queries, Australian test captain Pat Cummins has backed David Warner’s captaincy for the ODI format. Warner was stripped of the right to lead the team after he was found guilty in the sandpaper fiasco. Finch also mentioned that either Steve Smith or David Warner should get the captaincy. Amongst all the other contenders to gain captaincy, Pat Cummins was one too. He said, “If you were going to do all the formats and every game, I don’t think that’s realistic. Especially as a fast bowler, I think you do need to find windows to rest. I think you could manage that as well. It’s not something I’ve really thought about, to be honest. We’ll wait and see.”

David Warner says he is open to opportunities
David Warner has an excellent record when it comes to leading both the national team as well as IPL team. He has captained the Australian side in 12 matches which include 3 ODI and 9 T20Is and has won 11 out of those. Whereas, in the IPL, he was the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2015 to 2021. Under Warner’s captaincy, the team won their maiden title in 2016 and a couple of playoff games.
“It’s not our decision to make but Davey is always a fantastic leader around the team. He makes my job as a captain very easy. I don’t know the first thing about batting so having guys like Davey there to look after that is great,” Cummins added.
The Australian board is reportedly going to discuss the possibility of David Warner’s captaincy. Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley will review the lifetime ban on the opener. The player is looking forward to the role, and the board may soon take a final call. Warner will be part of the team touring India later this month for the T20I series.
