Gujarat had a rather struggling start, with Wriddhiman Saha (4), Hardik Pandya (13), and Vijay Shankar (19) getting out cheaply. However, Shubman Gill carried on his form and completed his third fifty of the season. He made a 34-ball 56 before getting out Kumar Kartikeya. But GT added 77 runs in the last five overs of the match and reached 207/6. Abhinav Manohar (42 off 21) and David Miller (46 off 22) played good cameos and smashed MI bowlers to all parts.

Even in the last game against the Punjab Kings, MI conceded 109 runs in the last six overs. It looked like the five-time champion is currently missing ace pacer, Jasprit Bumrah. The MI skipper Rohit Sharma also accepted that the bowlers are giving runs in the death overs which made the difference. In the post-match presentation, Rohit also spoke about the reason for choosing to bat second. After the game, the MI skipper said,

“We pretty much had control of the game till the last few overs when we went for too many runs. It’s just about execution. We need to execute what’s right. But in the end, we didn’t do that and gave too many runs. We have a strong batting lineup to achieve the target. Today our batting couldn’t get going. There’s a lot of dew as well so if we had batted well then maybe we would have chased it.”

Chasing the target, MI had an even worse start. Chasing the target of 208 runs, none of the batters reached a half-century. Nehal Wadhera was the highest scorer with 40 off 21. Eventually, they reached a score of 152/9, losing the game by 55 runs. Now, Mumbai will face Rajasthan Royals on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium. They can’t afford another loss because the tournament has progressed to the second half.
