Eventually, it was MS Dhoni and his men who kept their cool and pulled off a brilliant win to register their fifth IPL title. It started with CSK winning the toss and electing to bowl first. Gujarat got off to a flying start, with both openers adding 67 runs in seven overs. Shubman Gill got out after scoring 39 off 20 balls. Wriddhiman Saha scored a good half-century and made 54 off 39, with five fours and one six. However, in the end, it was a brilliant show from Sai Sudharsan. The 21-year-old played an incredible knock and scored 96 off 47, with 8 fours and six sixes, at a strike rate of 204.26.

Chasing the target, CSK were at 4/0 in 0.3 overs when the rain came down. It stopped the game for almost three hours. When the game re-started, Chennai got a target of 171 runs in 15 overs. They needed a good start, and that’s what both openers provided for them. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Conway added 74 runs for the first wicket in 6.3 overs. Gaikwad got out on 26, and Conway made a 25-ball 46.

Chennai had some other good contributions in the middle. In the end, they reached the target and made 171/5 in 15 overs. After the win, the Kiwi opener opened up about the win and termed it the greatest win of his career. Conway said,

“It was a long time to wait, very nervous but Rutu (Gaikwad) and I plotted how we’ll go about it. Personally, is the greatest win in my career. IPL final, doesn’t get bigger than that. Lot of credit to Mike Hussey, fellow left-handed player. Nice to be in his shoes.”

Shivam Dube (32 off 21), Ajinkya Rahane (27 off 13), Ambati Rayudu (19 off 8) and Ravindra Jadeja (15* off 6) helped CSK win the thrilling encounter. Chennai has now won five IPL titles, equaling Mumbai Indians. It was a fairytale ending to probably the best edition of the Indian Premier League.
