Media asked Matthew Hayden about the Chennai Super Kings’ opening pair ahead of the CSK vs RR game on Star Sports. The former CSK opener said that he was initially concerned about Conway’s batting approach but he’s doing the right thing now by taking the leadership role of being the senior partner.

“Initially I was worried about Devon Conway as he was taking some time in the powerplay while Ruturaj Gaikwad was playing the aggressor. But in the last few games, Conway has shifted the gears,” Matthew Hayden said on Star Sports ahead of CSK’s game against Rajasthan Royals on April 27.

Conway has smashed 314 runs in 7 matches of the IPL this season including 4 fifties. He has picked up some serious form in the last couple of games which has led to comfortable victories for the Chennai Super Kings in their last three games in the cash-rich league.

The CSK opener scored 56 runs off just 40 deliveries including 4 boundaries and 3 maximums in their previous game against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Conway remained unbeaten after scoring a 57-ball 77 in the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad allowing his side to chase down the total in just 18.4 overs.

Devon Conway’s best knock came in the CSK vs RCB game where he smashed 83 runs off only 45 deliveries with 6 monstrous sixes and at a strike rate of 184.44. The kind of aggression he has shown has also allowed Ruturaj Gaikwad to settle down and take his time on the other end without thinking too much about the run rate.
