Day 1 of the third and final test between Australia and Pakistan has come to an end. Both teams will be happy with the way it has gone for them to start the new year. However, Pakistan would be more happy to cross the 300-run mark and post a competitive first-inning score on Day 1, courtesy of a remarkable tenth wicket stand between Nos. 9 and 11.

Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat first. It was a horrible start as both openers bagged a two-ball duck each. Pakistan were 47/4 in 14.3 overs. However, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha came for rescue with a 94-run stand for the 6 wicket. Rizwan looked good for a hundred but got out for 88 off 103 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes. Salman followed him soon after scoring a 67-ball 53.

However, the Australian pace attack, led by skipper Pat Cummins, didn’t allow the visitors to play freely. From 220/6, Pakistan lost three wickets for just seven runs and were 227/9. But then came what could be a game-changing partnership between Aamer Jamal and Mir Hamza. Both added a 10th-wicket partnership of 86 runs to take the score to 313. Jamal scored his maiden fifty and made 82 off 97 balls, with nine fours and four sixes.

Cummins took his third consecutive fifer and ended with 5/61. Nathan Lyon took the last wicket. With the help of the last-wicket stand, Pakistan reached a respectable total. With not much time left for the stumps on Day 1, Australia had a tricky period of one over to negotiate. And then came David Warner, who is playing his last international test. When he stepped on to the crease, the visitors even gave him the “guard of honor.”

David Warner touched the Phil Hughes plaque and hugged his opening partner, Usman Khawaja. It was a great sign of respect from Pakistan, and the veteran opener also acknowledged it. Warner started with great style and smashed the very first ball for a boundary. Australia are at 6/0 at the stumps, and Warner will start from an unbeaten 6 on the second day.
