Watch: Akash Madhwal’s heroic spell against LSG in the IPL 2023 Eliminator
Akash Madhwal dismissed Prerak Mankad on the 5th delivery of his first over as the LSG opener was looking to make some room. Hrithik Shokeen took a brilliant catch as Madhwal got his first wicket and provided Mumbai Indians with the kind of start they were looking for.
The MI pacer then dismissed young LSG batter Ayush Badoni on the 4th ball of the 10th over, bowling him with a length delivery. He then bowled a fuller delivery, which Nicholas Pooran tried to push away but could only manage a thick outside edge to the keeper, as LSG crumbled from 69-2 to 74-5 within nine balls.

If Badoni was beaten for pace, Pooran was done in by the movement off the deck. Akash Madhwal conceded only one run in the over, with his figures after the first two overs reading 2-0-3-3. Madhwal ended up completing a match-winning five-wicket haul by dismissing Mohsin Khan and Ravi Bishnoi and claimed his first 5-wicket haul in the IPL.
The young pacer equalled Anil Kumble’s record for the most economical 5-wicket haul in IPL. He eventually ended with a stunning 5-5 in only 3.3 overs. Madhwal bagged five wickets and leaked only 5 runs to match Anil Kumble’s incredible feat that he had achieved against Rajasthan Royals way back in IPL 2009.
Akash Madhwal also became the first bowler to pick a five-wicket haul in the history of IPL playoffs as Mumbai Indians defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 81 runs in the IPL 2023 Eliminator. They will now face Gujarat Titans in the Qualifier 2.
