IPL 2023: The famed Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga may not be as good as Chennai Super Kings’ Matheesha Pathirana, according to former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris. This season, Pathirana has performed admirably for CSK, taking seven wickets in six games. Styris predicted that the 20-year-old CSK fast bowler might surpass Malinga on JioCinema.

Pathirana has consistently bowled the death overs for CSK. With an average of 27.57 and an economy of 8.27 this season.

“I Accept That It’s a Massive Call”: Scott Styris

“I think Pathirana could be better than Malinga. I accept that it’s a massive call because he’s too early in his career. He’s not as accurate as Malinga yet, but Malinga was at his best when he was bowling at 145kph. And he only had about three or four years where that was the case. You had to respect that pace when he had that speed, and then the change-ups came. When his top speed was down to 135, you could probably look at the slower ball more and react to the Yorkers.”

Said Styris

Pathirana is not as accurate as Malinga, but he still possesses raw pace that can worry hitters, the New Zealander continued, adding that even Malinga was at his best when he bowled at 145kph. With 170 wickets in 122 games, Malinga is regarded as one of the best bowlers ever competing in the IPL.

Pathirana, according to Styris, is fantastic for both Sri Lanka and CSK, and he naturally has a lot of speed. With his slinging movement that resembles Malinga’s, the Sri Lankan bowler has reached speeds of more than 150 kph many times this season.

Matheesha Pathirana’s Performances

“We’ve seen with Pathirana that he’s bowling at 145, 146, 148kph, so he has that natural advantage. He hits the Yorkers pretty well. As he naturally evolves and gets more experience, he can hit those Yorkers with that action as much as Malinga, but with a quicker speed and the ability for change-ups. He’s the exciting talent for Sri Lanka and exciting talent for CSK.”

Said Styris

For Chennai in the IPL 2023, Matheesha Pathirana has been putting in some impressive performances. The 20-year-old has taken seven wickets in the six games he has played thus far. Scott Styris, the former New Zealand cricketer, was impressed by his achievements for the four-time champions.

The 47-year-old said Pathirana could surpass the illustrious Lasith Malinga as a pacer in the future. Even Styris considered how only three or four years of Malinga’s career saw him perform at his best. On May 6, at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium, CSK and the five-time champion Mumbai Indians will square off in a major IPL 2023 match.
