On May 6, Delhi Capitals (DC) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by seven wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Following the match, Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly, former BCCI Chairman and current Director of Cricket of Delhi Capitals, were seen shaking hands and greeting each other, marking a significant moment of reconciliation. This is in contrast to the last time these teams played, when the two had passed each other without shaking hands, creating a controversy.

Kohli and Ganguly have had a contentious history since Ganguly was the BCCI President and Kohli was the India skipper. When the BCCI announced Rohit Sharma as the skipper of the white-ball formats going forward, despite Kohli never resigning from the post of the ODI captain, Kohli contradicted the Board’s claim that they had told him to reconsider his decision to quit captaincy and that they were looking at just one-ball captain in limited-overs cricket. A video had surfaced showing Ganguly dodging Kohli during the customary post-match handshake ritual, and the two even unfollowed each other on Instagram.

RCB batted first and scored a decent total of 181/4 in 20 overs. Kohli hit his sixth half-century of the season and became the first player to breach the 7000 runs mark in IPL history, but he couldn’t accelerate after getting set and ended up with a mediocre strike rate of 119.57. Unlike RCB batters, DC took an aggressive approach and went all out against the RCB bowlers. Phil Salt, in particular, was the wrecker in chief with the bat for the Capitals and came up with an outrageous display of ball-striking.

In the previous RCB and DC game at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Ganguly and Kohli did not greet each other. However, in the reverse fixture, they both put their egos aside and warmly greeted each other after the result, showing enough maturity to move past their differences. While things may not be as good as they were before between the two, their willingness to reconcile and shake hands is a step in the right direction.

Overall, it was a comprehensive victory for Delhi Capitals, who kept themselves alive in the Indian Premier League with their thumping seven-wicket win over RCB. Kohli and Ganguly’s handshake is a positive sign for Indian cricket, indicating that sportsmanship and maturity are valued by players and officials alike.
