The Perth Scorchers side has come into the KFC BBL 11 with some serious depth in its bowling attack. They recently brought Tymal Mills on board to further enhance an already-impressive bowling group. With this, however, comes selection headaches for the franchise.

It became evident on their big bash live score on December 14, Tuesday. Their best performer in the first match against Brisbane Heat, Matthew Kelly, ended up warming the bench just a game later. Kelly’s figures of 4/28 in that match was followed by a rather expensive 1/30 in the next game.

The reasoning behind Kelly’s absence is the strict border regulations in place within Western Australia. In the end, it only proves how tremendously versatile Perth Scorchers’ bowling options are. Mills did end up justifying his selection with figures of 3/23 in four overs.

“Matt Kelly will be gutted to be sitting out” – Tymal Mills

Mills expressed great pleasure following his outing on Tuesday. He credited his fellow bowlers for their support at the other end. He also expressed sympathy towards Kelly, who was pushed out of the playing XI.

Matt Kelly took four-for in the first game, I’m sure he’ll be gutted to be sitting out at the moment and David Moody was bowling rapidly in the nets and getting the guys hopping around.

It keeps the pressure on us guys that are in the XI to obviously produce out in the middle because you’ve got guys on the bench that are more than capable of coming back in. It’s also nice that the coach Adam (Voges) knows that if need be he can rotate and you’ve got guys that are more than capable of doing a good job,” Mills said.

Perth Scorchers are already missing one of their star players

The squad is missing the services of one of their top bowlers, Jhye Richardson. He is currently playing for Australia in the day-night Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval. He will return to the group ahead of the BBL 11 finals, should they end up qualifying for it.

His absence hasn’t dented the strength of the pace attack by any means. This goes to show the kind of bowlers they have in their armory. Aussie nationals, Ashton Agar and Andrew Tye fill up the hole left by their fellow teammate. While Agar has been outstandingly economic, Tye became the fastest to reach 100 wickets in the BBL. Combine that with the mixture of experience from Jason Behrendorff and the youthful exuberance of upcoming leg-spinner, Peter Hatzoglou and the Perth Scorchers side have a second string of bowlers at the ready.

All in all, their success can be attributed to the skillset of the bowlers or the headspace they are in, or a combination of both. But when it’s working out as well as it has, the logistics isn’t something they will be worried about.
