The visitors scored only 245 runs in their innings, with senior batsman Cheteshwar Pujara and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant scoring 66 and 57 runs, respectively. As a result, the Three Lions were assigned a 378-run target to chase in their second innings.

“I’ll agree we had a pretty ordinary day as far as batting is concerned,” Rathour said in a press conference.

“We were ahead in the game. We were in a position where we could have batted them out of the game. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. A lot of them got starts but really couldn’t convert those starts,”

After the fall of Rishabh Pant, England bowlers dished out a barrage of short balls and the lower order succumbed to it. Shreyas Iyer once again got out while hooking a short ball and this has been a matter of concern.

“Yes, they used a short-ball plan against us in the field. We had to show a little better, not intent, but strategy. We could’ve handled it slightly differently. People tried to play shots but didn’t really convert or execute them well enough. They got out to that. We will have to rethink how we handle that next time in a similar situation, against similar bowlers who keep similar fields,”

In reply, Team England had a flying start as openers Alex Lees and Zak Crawley stitched a 100+ run partnership for the first wicket. The visitors made a strong comeback taking three wickets in quick succession. However, England’s ship was steadied by former England skippers Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow who added 150 runs for the 4th wicket. England needs further 119 runs to level the series, while need seven wickets to clinch a famous series win on English soil after 15 years.
