BBL Draft: Former South African skipper Faf du Plessis became the first player to formally nominate for the new BBL overseas draught. And now reports are rife that Eoin Morgan will be the latest BBL target for the upcoming season. Morgan is no stranger to the Big Bash League, having spent three seasons with the Sydney Thunder. In fact, Trevor Bayliss the head coach of Thunder has worked closely with Morgan when they won their first 50-over World Cup in 2019. However, Morgan and the Thunder wouldn’t be able to do a private trade under the new BBL rules. These rules are intended to attract more international talent to the flagging competition in an increasingly crowded T20 marketplace.

The three teams that did not make the finals last season, the Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, and Brisbane Heat, would all be able to sign Morgan before the Thunder. Overseas players will be divided into platinum ($340,000), gold ($260,000), silver ($175,000), and bronze ($100,000) categories. Under draft regulations to be tested for the first time in August, each club can pick up to three foreign players.

Morgan’s final game for the Thunder was memorable in January 2017. The Irishman hit a six over the sightscreen with five seconds remaining in the game against the Stars. The English skipper bid adieu to international cricket just two days back.

Du Plessis and Morgan are expected to demand the $340,000 platinum level pay package. Both have been successful captains for their respective national sides and in IPL. They will most likely only stay for the first half of the competition, from mid-December to early January. Du Plessis is expected to return home for South Africa’s new T20 competition. Meanwhile, other key players will head to the UAE for the new, lucrative T20 competition, which is also set to begin in early January. Australia’s three-match ODI series against South Africa slated to begin in early January is expected to be called off. This has been done to ensure South African players can return in time for the new T20 tournament. This would clear the calendar for Australia’s international to play in the BBL’s second half. Du Plessis, along with batsman Rilee Rossouw, all-rounder David Wiese, and fast bowler Marchant de Lange, is one of four former South African players who were nominated for the BBL draught on Thursday.
