ENG vs IND: Dravid Names 3 Players Who Could Feature as Openers if Rohit Doesn’t Recover in Time
ENG vs IND: Team India head coach Rahul Dravid has named three potential openers who could feature in Edgbaston. The fifth Test match (rescheduled) between India and England is set to begin on Friday (July 1) in Birmingham. But there has been no official update on Rohit Sharma’s availability for the game. On Saturday (June 25), during the third day of India’s warm-up game against English county side Leicestershire, the premier batter tested positive for COVID-19. According to PTI, the Indian captain tested positive again on Wednesday, (June 29) and has been ruled out of the game. However, Dravid has dismissed the suggestion, saying any decision on Rohit’s availability would be made after consultation with the medical team. However, if Rohit is unable to recover on time, India has enough options to replace him at the top. And, according to Dravid, he has his combinations organised by scenario.

ENG vs IND: ‘Apart from Mayank we have other options,’ says Dravid
Mayank Agarwal has been added to the squad as a replacement for Rohit, and he arrived on Monday. Mayank, as a designated opening batter, should be the leading contender to replace Rohit and partner Shubman Gill at the top. However, Dravid has added a bit of twist by saying beside Mayank India are weighing two other options.
“Obviously, Mayank is a regular opener. someone who opens regularly. We have other options too; Bharat himself has opened in a lot of games for Andhra and showed in that side game that he is batting superbly at the moment. He scored a 70 and a 40 (43) after opening the batting. We got him to open in that innings keeping a lot of things in mind,”
Dravid said in a press conference
Dravid’s third suggestion was for senior batter Cheteshwar Pujara. The 34-year-old opener has previously opened in seven innings for India. Pujara amassed 395 runs, including two half-centuries and an unbeaten 145 against Sri Lanka in 2015 as an opener.
“Pujara has got a lot of great quality. He has opened for India as well in the past. So I would not want to give things away, but like I said, in our minds, we are clear on the direction we are going,”
