ENG vs IND: India batter Cheteshwar Pujara discussed his return to the national team after a difficult period in Test cricket. The right-handed batter’s last Test century came in 2019 and he was struggling to make an impact with the bat. As a result, he and several other senior Indian players, including Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma, were dropped from the squad for Sri Lanka Tests. Pujara continued to play domestic cricket after being dropped from the Indian squad. This year, the right-handed batter excelled in both the Ranji Trophy and the County Championship. He scored two half-centuries in the Ranji Trophy on the Indian domestic circuit. However, Pujara showed his true class while playing for Sussex in the County Championship.

After Derbyshire (2014), Yorkshire (2015 and 2018), and Nottinghamshire, Sussex was Pujara’s fourth County Club (2017). Cheteshwar Pujara’s record in County Cricket has not been stellar. In 36 innings, he has scored 988 runs at an average of 29.33. But the 34-year-old made a huge turnaround, smashing four centuries, two of which he converted into double centuries.

Pujara, who returned to the test side for the England tour, emphasized the need to play so many first-class games after being dropped from the national squad. “The most important thing was playing so many first-class games. I was preparing for this when I was playing back home before I joined Sussex,” Pujara said in an interaction with BCCI TV.

“In the three games I played for Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy, I found my rhythm, knew that I was batting well. It was about getting a big score and so when I had that in my first game, I knew that everything is back to normal now. (I was) finding my footwork, the back lift was coming along well,”

he added

After a successful stint at the county level, Pujara would be keen to carry forward his form in the rescheduled Test. It will be interesting to see where he bats since Hanuma Vihari played at number 3 in Pujara’s absence during the home series against Sri Lanka. India are leading the Test series 2-1 and will be hoping to create history in England.
