IPL 2022: 3 Players GT Might Release Ahead of Next Year’s Auction
IPL 2022: Gujarat Titans (GT) were fantastic in their debut Indian Premier League season, with balanced performances in all departments. The Ahmedabad-based side was not thought to be a serious contender for the championship before the season began. However, GT punched above their weight to prove their critics wrong. The debutant remained the top team in the league stage and became the first team to qualify for the playoffs thanks to their on-field brilliance. They smacked their ticket to the final with a win over the Rajasthan Royals in the first qualifier. In the summit clash, GT defeated the Sanju Samson-led team with ease. Although the Titans won the championship, there were clearly flaws in the team that was exposed in the first half of the season. This move kept them stable for the majority of the second half, allowing them to perform well. As a result, the team’s management may make some changes to the roster next year. This list of three players represents those who are unlikely to be retained duo their poor show.

IPL 2022: GT unlikely to retain these three players
1) Vijay Shankar
Once regarded as Team India’s premier all-rounder, Vijay Shankar’s performances in the last two editions have been disappointing. After being dropped from the Indian team, he lost his batting form and is not bowling enough overs. He scored 97 runs at an average of 24.25 in the 2020 season before allowing 58 runs in seven innings at an average of 11.60. However, his performances for Tamil Nadu in the 2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy helped him land a contract with Titans.
Shankar was only able to score 19 runs in four appearances, with scores of 4, 13, 2, and 0. He arose to lack confidence in his ability to score runs for the team and was dismissed recklessly. He played for GT in the first half of the season and is the leading candidate to be released before the start of the next season.

2) Jayant Yadav
The 32-year-old off-spinner didn’t feature in any games during the 2022 season, as Rashid Khan was already the team’s first-choice spinner. The management’s stance is clear, as left-arm spinner Sai Kishore was added later in the tournament. Kishore’s success may pave the way for Jayant Yadav to depart next season. In recent editions, he has been used to keep opposing batters tight in powerplay overs.
Although Yadav’s economy rate has been under eight, he lacks wickets, which is a differentiating skill against the players who are ready to replace him in the team. Yadav has primarily been a useful bowler for the Indian team in the red-ball format. Except for 2018, he has only played in 19 IPL matches and has been a member of various squads since 2015. GT paid INR 1.70 crore for him because of his versatility as a bowling all-rounder.
3) Matthew Wade
Matthew Wade and Wriddhiman Saha were the last-minute additions in the mega-auction for the defending champions. He was preferred over Saha for the opening position but was eventually demoted to the middle order. However, the position change did not work, and the T20 World Cup winner managed 157 runs in 10 matches at 15.70. His strike rate of 113.77 was also below average.
Wade returned to the IPL after an 11-year absence, appearing in three games for the Delhi Daredevils (Delhi Capitals) in 2011. While the Australian has scored in double figures in all but two of his nine IPL innings this season, his highest score is 35 against Rajasthan. Despite his poor performance, Wade had the support of the team’s management. However, the management may now drop him in favor of a young backup for Saha.
