Rachin Ravindra has become New Zealand’s youngest Test debutant since Ish Sodhi (Bangladesh, 2013). The Kiwi all-rounder received his Test cap from teammate Tom Blundell ahead of the ongoing 1st Test vs India in Kanpur. The youngster was also part of the New Zealand team that won the ICC World Test Championship. However, few people know that Rachin Ravindra’s first name is inspired by two of India’s cricketing legends.

As New Zealand faced India in the first T20I of the three-match series in Jaipur, another Indian-origin player was named to their playing XI. Rachin Ravindra was the player in question. The middle-order batsman’s stay was cut short as he was bowled for 7 runs off 8 deliveries by Mohammed Siraj. However, his arrival at the crease prompted Indian cricket fans to Google his name in order to know more about the player. Rachin was born in Wellington, New Zealand, to Indian parents Ravi Krishnamurthy, a software engineer, and architect, Deepa Krishnamurthy. Rachin, 22, has been named after – Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. Apparently, the name is a combination of Rahul’s ‘Ra’ and Sachin Tendulkar’s ‘chin.’

Rachin made his international debut in the T20I series vs Bangladesh, earlier this year. He was the youngest Kiwi to play in the 2016 ICC U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh, at the age of 16. He also played in the 2018 U-19 World Cup, where he met Dravid, who was the coach of the India-19 team.

“Yeah, Dravid is an absolute legend in the game…So if I can pick his brains it would be amazing,” said Rachin during the T20I series.

Rachin has been making headlines with his run-scoring spree since making his first-class debut a little more than two years ago. In 26 games, the middle order batter has three first-class centuries and nine fifties.

Rachin’s father, Ravi who relocated to New Zealand in the 1990s, founded the Hutt Hawks Club in 2011. The organisation is responsible for bringing players to India from New Zealand every summer. It allowed Rachin to travel to India and play at RDT, Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh since he was 13 years old.

Khatib Syed Shahabuddin, a coach at the Andhra Pradesh cricket academy, has also spoken highly of the Kiwi player.“He is a promising cricketer. As a young cricketer, he showed a lot of promise and hunger to excel as a left-handed bat and left-arm spin.”

Speaking of his other idol, Rachin said, that he has tried to mirror the batting style of Master Blaster. “My batting idol is Sachin. I have modelled my game on him since I was very young,” Rachin had said back in 2016.

Rachin bowled seven overs and gave away 28 runs on the first day of the 1st Test at Kanpur. He will play a key role as the Test match progresses and the pitch starts to wear and tear.
