IPL 2023: As the competition enters the final league stage, IPL 2023 has provided the Indian selectors with many alternatives. Many of those players have received support from veterans and specialists for the Indian team for the next T20 series later in the summer. However, there has only been one player virtually everyone wants on their team for the upcoming ODI World Cup.

Suresh Raina, the former cricketer for India, was one of the first to support the young Yashasvi Jaiswal for the position. Still, a recent comment made by Kevin Pietersen about the ODI World Cup put the RR star up against Shubman Gill. Yashasvi and Gill are leading the battle for the Orange Cap, one run behind RCB skipper Faf du Plessis. They have both been in outstanding form during the ongoing IPL 2023.

“We See Future Of India”, Kevin Pietersen

Both players have batted 13 times this season and have recorded half-century-plus knocks, including a century each. However, Yashasvi outscored Gill by five runs, placing her in second place with 575 runs. The difference between the two is only due to Yashasvi’s higher strike rate of 166.18 compared to Gill’s 146.

The Rajasthan Royals‘ opener has a higher percentage of successful boundaries. In a Betway piece, Pietersen was all praise for the two young batsmen, declaring that he saw Gill and Yashasvi as the “future of the India top order” before pleading with the selectors to pick the latter for the ODI World Cup side, setting the two up against one another. The GT star took Shikhar Dhawan’s place as Rohit Sharma’s designated opening partner in ODIs last year, and he solidified it with a record double ton in January.

The only effect of Yashasvi’s participation would be to place him in direct rivalry with Gill as India’s third opener.

“We see the future of the India top order in Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. I would strongly look at Jaiswal for the 50-over World Cup. I’d blood him and let him go. I think 50 overs will be a thing of the past in the not-too-distant future, but I’d get him into the squad straight away.”

Exposure For Young Players

The IPL provided a significant platform for these young, bright cricketers to establish their value on a grand scale, and Pietersen was all praise for it.

“The IPL gives young players three things. It allows them to play, it gives them the visibility of fans worldwide, and it gives them the composure to perform in the highest intensity of battle. Stadiums are full, everything’s busy, and it’s high intensity. If you come through that and tick all three boxes, you’re destined to play international sport. That’s what I’ve seen from these two youngsters in particular. They’re stars. They’re not just hit-and-miss cricketers. They’re absolute quality.”
