The match No. 38 between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is underway at the moment. Both teams are up against each other at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Though both teams are almost out of the race for the semi-finals, they have always had some intense moments whenever they have played against each other. And something similar has already happened in the ongoing first innings of the game.

Bangladesh won the toss and put Sri Lanka to bat first. Sri Lanka has won two games, while Bangladesh have only won one. But this game is important for both teams to stay in the race to qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, where the top eight teams will qualify. But in the ongoing game, the world saw one rare type of dismissal.

Watch: Angelo Mathews becomes 1st International player to given out “Timed Out”

Angelo Mathews became the first player in the history of international cricket to be given out for taking too much time. This happened during the 25th over of the inning. Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama, who was playing very well on 41 runs with 4 sixes. It was the second wicket for Shakib. Once Samarawickrama got out, he was replaced with Angelo Mathews, who took more than the usual time to come to the crease.

Mathews mistakenly took the wrong helmet with him. In changing the helmet, he exceeded the time limit. As per the rule, the next batter should be ready on the crease in 120 seconds or two minutes. Hence, Bangladesh appealed to the umpires, and Mathews was given out for taking more time.

This was the first instance in international cricket when a batter got out by this mode of dismissal. It ignited the controversy, and Mathews, along with the Sri Lankan team, were not happy with the decision. He even threw his helmet in anger while going back to the dugout. Fans on social media also started talking about the incidents, and everyone on the field, including the commentators, was surprised by the way he got out.
