Massive Blow for England; Star All-Rounder Announces His International Retirement in the Middle of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
England entered the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as the defending champion. Many former cricketers predicted that England might end up defending their title in India. But what happened was just unexpected. England had a horrible performance, and they lost five of their games in the first half of the tournament.
As a result, England are sitting at the bottom of the points table with only one win. They still have three games to go and will look to end the tournament well. But it looks like England’s problems are growing. Amid the tournament, David Willey has announced his international retirement and will not play any international format after this World Cup 2023.
David Willey retires from international cricket after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
On Wednesday, David Willey announced that he would retire from all forms of international cricket after the end of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. His decision comes after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) didn’t include him on the list of cricketers who were offered central contracts for the 2023–24 season.
The all-rounder took to Instagram and shared the post. He wrote, “”I never wanted this day to come. From a young boy, I’ve only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England. So, with careful thought and consideration, it is with great regret that I feel the time has come for me to retire from all forms of international cricket at the end of the World Cup.”
He thanked his teammates, the cricket board, family, and friends for the support. So far, he has played three games and taken five wickets in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. He has played 70 ODIs so far, taken 94 wickets, and scored 627 runs. In 43 T20Is, he has picked up 51 wickets. It will be a big setback for England, as Willey is a key player for them in limited-over cricket.
