Bangladesh vs West Indies History

Whenever Bangladesh and West Indies lock horns, you know the duel between two rising stars will be one to watch. Bangladesh has been a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 2000, and its status allows it to play Test, One-Day International (ODI) and T20 International (T20I) matches.

Even though the country has not won many trophies, it managed to win an ICC Trophy in Malaysia, securing its position in its first Cricket World Cup in 1999. The 2015 quarterfinals were the furthest the team has gone in the ICC World Cup.

Considering the scoreboard, Bangladesh has been the most successful in ODIs, with 136 of its 388 matches ending in their favour. Currently, the country is ranked 9th in Test, 6th in T20 International, and 7th in ODIs.

On the other hand, the West Indies have been far more successful in international competitions. First of all, the team is composed of players from 15 Caribbean states, mainly English-speaking ones. The team is governed by Cricket West Indies and with much success at that. West Indies have won the ICC World Cup twice, in 1975 and 1979. The team has also emerged on top of the ICC T20 World Cup twice and has had considerable success in the competition with the junior categories.

West Indies have been a full member of the ICC since 1926, coming on top in all categories.

The rivalry between Bangladesh and the West Indies may not be as fierce as that of India and England, for example. Still, the teams have met on several occasions that are now marked as important milestones in their respective histories.

Namely, when Bangladesh was touring the West Indies in 2009, winning against the home team, it marked its 200th ODI victory and its first overseas Test series victory ever.

However, in the past 20 years, the West Indies have been holding the lead in head-to-head duels in International (ODIs), Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), and Test matches.

As mentioned earlier, the next series of duels between Bangladesh and the West Indies is scheduled in June and July 2022. The teams will play two Test matches that are a part of  the 2021–2023 ICC World Test Championship, three ODIs, and three Twenty20 matches. The matchups might be a good opportunity for Bangladesh to redeem itself and get on the winning streak or equally as good of an opportunity for West Indies to confirm their dominance in this duel.

Bangladesh vs West Indies Betting Predictions

Whenever Bangladesh faces the West Indies, we see a tightly contested match. At the 2021  T20 World Cup, neither team had had any valuable momentum before meeting in the 23rd match of the tournament.

Even though its batting order is top-notch, thanks to the players such as Chris Gayle, Shimron Hetmyer, Kieron Pollard, and others, the West Indies team failed to capitalize much on that. Their bowling section was led by players like Akeal Hosein and Dwayne Bravo, whose performances were subpar for most of the tournament.

The Bangladesh squad had a similar situation. They had lost a game against England by 8 wickets, and their batting order appeared lacklustre and out of focus.

The game between the two teams turned out to be a real nail-biter as everyone had expected it to be. Andre Russell’s final over gave West Indies the advantage and a chance to close out on Bangladesh with a 3-run win.

Considering the last 12 matchups, West Indies were victorious on seven occasions, two of which happened in ICC T20 World Cup tournaments. On the flip side, Bangladesh managed to walk away with a win five times, one of which was registered in ICC T20 World Cup tournaments.

If we consider that West Indies will be the home team for the next matchups against Bangladesh, it is only prudent to give them an upper hand. However, the game can go either way, so make sure to come back for a more detailed prognosis as the matches draw nearer.

An unbeaten fifty from Nkrumah Bonner (74*) has helped West Indies recover from a precarious position and end day one of the second Test against Bangladesh on a positive note. At stumps, the visitors were on 223 for 5 with Bonner and Joshua Da Silva (22*) in the middle. For Bangladesh, Taijul Islam and Abu Jayed shared two scalps each.

Brimming with confidence after the stunning win in the first Test, West Indies started the proceedings with the bat on a positive note after their skipper Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and decided to bat first. Brathwaite and fellow opener John Campbell shared a 66-run stand for the first wicket before Islam dismissed the latter to give the hosts the much-needed breakthrough.

As we saw when we followed the match on 10cric india, it was followed by three more wickets in quick succession as West Indies found themselves reeling at 116 for 4. 21 runs after Campbell’s dismissal, Abu Jayed castled Sheyne Moseley to put Bangladesh on top. Brathwaite was the next to go when Soumya Sarkar ended his 47-run knock by making him edge one to Najmul Hossain Shanto at first slip.

Kyle Mayers, who scored an unbeaten match-winning double-century in the first Test, then fell to Jayed for just five as West Indies slid further. But before Bangladesh could make further inroads in the game,  Bonner and Jermaine Blackwood steadied the ship. The duo added 62 runs for the fifth wicket before Taijul broke the stand by dismissing Blackwood via the caught and mode dismissal.

Bonner was then joined by Da Silva and the pair saw off the remaining 18 overs to help their side end the day on a promising note. Their partnership is worth 45 runs so far and the duo would be looking to power West Indies to more than 300 runs.

Not many people backed West Indies to win when Bangladesh set up a target of 395 for the visitors in the first Test. However, the men from the Caribbean had other ideas as they pulled off the highest successful run chase on the Asian soil. West Indies have a very good chance to win the series but can they back their performance with another good one? Read as we preview the second Test between Bangladesh and West Indies that’s set to get underway on February 11 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka

Kyle Mayers shattered records and scored a magnificent double hundred on debut to help West Indies beat Bangladesh by 3 wickets in the first Test. However, even after the win, we think that Bangladesh will bounce back in the second Test. West Indies has been far too inconsistent in the last few years. Every now and then they deliver a performance that gets the cricket fanatics excited but fail to back it with another good one.

Bangladesh is a very good team in home conditions. Even though they lost the first Test they didn’t play bad cricket. It was just a blinder from Kyle Mayers that took the game away from them. They have four quality spinners and will create a lot of trouble for the West Indies batsmen. As a batting unit, most of their batsmen looked good and we expect them to play well in the second Test as well

Playing Combination

Bangladesh

Probable XI- Tamim Iqbal, Shadman Islam, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque (c), Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Liton Das (wk), Mehidy Hasan, Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman

West Indies

Probable XI- Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis, Rassie van der Dussen, Quinton de Kock (c & wk), Temba Bavuma, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje

Probable Top Performers

Tamim Iqbal – The destructive opener missed out in the first Test but he is one of the senior members of this team. He’s was in top form in the ODI series, scoring 158 runs at an average of 52.22. He’s one player that can play big innings, something Bangladesh will expect from in the second Test.

Mehidy Hasan – Mehidy Hasan was in top form in the 1st Test. After scoring a magnificent hundred in the first inning, he picked four wickets and helped Bangladesh bundle out West Indies for 259. He picked 4 wickets in the second innings as well to end a very good game. We think he’ll be real threat on this surface.

Kyle Mayers– Kyle Mayers scored a double hundred on his debut to hand West Indies a massive win. He’s been very good on this tour and played some fine knocks in the limited over series as well. He along with Kraigg Brathwaite are the two players West Indies will be looking up to if they’re to win this series.

Probable winners

Even though West Indies defeated Bangladesh in the first match we will back the host to bounce back in the next game. Bangladesh have a very balanced team with quality batsmen and top-class bowlers. Also, over the years West Indies have not been that consistent. It’ll be very difficult for them to match their performance in the second Test.

Mominul Haque’s tenth Test ton and a good start with the ball in the second innings have put Bangladesh on top in the ongoing first Test against West Indies in Chattogram. At stumps on day four, West Indies were on 110 for 3, needing 285 more runs to register an unlikely win.

Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell started cautiously and batted for 16 overs to add 39 runs before Mehidy Hasan took three wickets in quick succession to put the hosts on top. The spinner gave Bangladesh the first breakthrough by dismissing Campbell for 23. 9 runs later, Hasan accounted for Brathwaite to reduce West Indies to 48 for 2 from 39 for no loss.

He was not done yet as he gave the visitors another blow by dismissing Sheyne Moseley for 12 to put Bangladesh firmly on top. Nkrumah Bonner and Kyle Mayers then steadied the ship for the visitors and ensured that they did not lose any more wickets before stumps. The duo shared an unbeaten stand of 51 runs before the play ended.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh resumed on 47 for 3 with their overall lead extended to 218 and declared on 223 for 8. Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim started the proceedings with the bat. The duo could add only 26 runs to the overnight score before Rahkeem Cornwall accounted for Rahim. West Indies, however, could not capitalise on the early breakthrough as Mominul and Liton Das sent their bowlers on a leather hunt.

The pair added 76 runs to take the score to 149 for 4 before lunch was taken. After lunch, they added 57 more runs and took the score past 200 before Jomel Warrican ended the 133-run stand by dismissing Liton for 69. Prior to that, Mominul had completed his century. Liton’s dismissal triggered a mini-collapse as Bangladesh lost four wickets for 17 runs before declaring their innings.

Brief scores:

Bangladesh 430 and 223/8 dec (Mominul Haque 115; Rahkeem Cornwall 3-81) lead West Indies 259 and 110 for 3 ( Kyle Mayers 37*; Mehidy Hasan 3-52) by 285 runs.

Bangladesh and West Indies will play their first Test series of 2021 when the two sides lock horns against each other at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium at Chattogram on February 3rd, 2021. This will be the first Test for Bangladesh in almost a year. The last time they played a Test match was in February 2020, where they beat Zimbabwe by an innings and 106 runs.

As far as the West Indies are concerned, they will be without regular skipper Jason Holder, who pulled out of the tour due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite will don the skipper’s hat in the series against Bangladesh. Also, West Indies enter the series low on morale as well.

They have lost the last 4 Test matches that they have played and lost two of them by an innings to New Zealand. Also, they were mauled 0-3 in the recently concluded ODI series against Bangladesh. As far as the Tigers are concerned, they have some experienced campaigners in their ranks for the Test series, with the likes of Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim having played more than 50 Test matches.

Shakib Al Hasan will also be high on confidence, after bagging the Man of the Series award in the ODI series against the West Indies.

Playing Combinations

Bangladesh

Probable XI: Tamim Iqbal, Saif Hassan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque(c), Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Abu Jayed, Mustafizur Rahman

West Indies

Probable XI: Kraigg Brathwaite(c), John Campbell, Nkrumah Bonner, Sheyne Moseley, Jermaine Blackwood, Joshua De Silva, Rakheem Cornwall, Shannon Gabriel, Alzaari Joseph, Veerasamy Permaul, Kemar Roach.

Probable Top Performers

Mushfiqur Rahim

The last time Mushfiqur Rahim put on the whites for his country, he scored a scintillating unbeaten double century against Zimbabwe. Rahim is also the leading run-scorer for Bangladesh in Test cricket and has scored 4413 runs at an average of 36.77. The wicket-keeper batsman is also the most capped player for the hosts and has appeared in 70 Tests.

Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan is entering into the Test series after bagging the ‘Man of the Series’ award in the ODI series against the West Indies. Shakib is also the third-highest run-scorer for Bangladesh and has plundered 3862 runs at an average of 39.40. The left-arm spinner is also the highest wicket-taker for his country in the format and has scalped 210 wickets in the whites.

Jermaine Blackwood

Jermaine Blackwood had a successful 2020 with the willow. The right-hander scored 427 runs in the 5 Tests that he played last year, and even scored a century and 3 fifties. In the second Test against New Zealand at Wellington in December 2020, he scored a fighting 69 in the first innings. Expect Blackwood to come good in the first Test against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh vs West Indies, 2021 – 3rd ODI – Preview: Best Betting Odds and Winner Prediction

West Indies’ misery against the spinners continued in the second ODI against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National stadium. If in the first game it was Shakib Al Hasan who stunned the visitors, in the second rubber, it was Mehidy Hasan who flummoxed the West Indian batsmen. The off-spinner bowled 9.4 overs, gave away just 25 runs and picked up 4 wickets, and also won the player of the match award.

Yet again, the West Indies top order crumbled in the second ODI. Among the top 7 batsmen, there were four willow wielders who recorded single-digit scores. In fact, it was Rovman Powell who lent some respect to the total, scoring a fighting 66-ball 41, as the visitors were bowled out for 148. In reply, the experienced duo of Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal allowed Bangladesh to reach the finish line with ease.

While Tamim scored a patient half-century, Shakib scored a sedate unbeaten 43, as the hosts chased down the target with 7 wickets and 16.4 overs to spare. Now, with Bangladesh having taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, all that the West Indies have at stake is pride. The third ODI will take place on January 25th, 2021, at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

Probable playing XIs

Bangladesh

Tamim Iqbal (C), Liton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Mahmudullah, Soumya Sarkar, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain/Mohammad Saifuddin, Hasan Mahmud

Bench: Afif Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Mithun, Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam

West Indies

Sunil Ambris, Kjorn Ottley, Joshua da Silva (WK)/Jahmar Hamilton, Andre McCarthy, Kyle Mayers, Nkrumah Bonner, Jason Mohammed (C), Rovman Powell, Raymon Reifer/Keon Harding, Alzarri Joseph, Akeal Hosein

Bench: Joshua da Silva (WK)/Jahmar Hamilton, Raymon Reifer/Keon Harding, Chemar Holder

Probable Top Performers

Shakib Al Hasan- Shakib Al Hasan has made a dream return to the international arena. In the first ODI, he claimed the ‘Man of the Match’ award, scalping 4 wickets and gave away just 8 runs in his 7.2 overs. In the second rubber, the left-arm spinner once again came to the fore, and picked up 2 wickets, giving away only 30 runs in his quota of 10 overs. With the bat too, Shakib made a mark in the second ODI, scoring an unbeaten 43. Expect Shakib to put up another rollicking performance in the final ODI as well.

Tamim Iqbal- Along with Shakib, the other veteran who has stood up in the first two games has been Tamim Iqbal. The left-hander was solid in the second ODI against the West Indies, scoring 50 off 76 balls. In the first ODI too, Tamim top-scored for his side, scoring 44. If Tamim can get going in the final ODI, then Bangladesh can fancy their chances of a series whitewash against the West Indies.

Rovman Powell- One man who has contributed with the willow in both the ODIs for the West Indies has been Rovman Powell. In the first ODI, Powell scored a 31-ball 28 and put on a partnership of 59 runs for the 6th wicket with Kyle Mayers. In the second ODI too, it was Powell who stood up to the Bangladesh spinners and scored a valiant 41. Powell will need some support from his teammates as well if West Indies want to prevent a whitewash tomorrow.

Shakib Al Hasan will never forget the date 20th January 2021. It was on this date that the Bangladesh cricketing legend made a triumphant return to international cricket. Not only did Shakib return to the field after more than a year, but he also inspired the Tigers to a sensational win over the West Indies in the first ODI at the Shere Bangla Cricket stadium.

The West Indian batsmen were totally flummoxed by Shakib’s guile in the first ODI, and none of the batsmen could even score a half-century. The visitors were bowled out for a meagre total of 122 in 32.2 overs, with Shakib recording stunning bowling figures. The left-arm spinner bowled 7.2 overs, gave away just 8 runs, and picked up 4 wickets.

In reply, Bangladesh cantered home comfortably with 6 wickets to spare. Skipper Tamim Iqbal was the catalyst for Bangladesh with the willow, and the left-hander scored a patient 44 off 69 deliveries to help Bangladesh draw first blood in the series. The second ODI of the series will take place on January 22nd, 2021 with the series on the line at the same venue.

Probable playing XIs

Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal (C), Liton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Mahmudullah, Soumya Sarkar, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Hasan Mahmud

West Indies: Sunil Ambris, Andre McCarthy, Joshua da Silva (WK), Kyle Mayers, Nkrumah Bonner, Akeal Hosein, Jason Mohammed (C), Rovman Powell, Raymon Reifer, Alzarri Joseph, Chemar Holder

Probable Top Performers

Shakib Al Hasan- Without any doubt, Shakib Al Hasan will once again be the man to watch out for. The inexperienced West Indian side was in doldrums, as Shakib ripped through the opposition batting line up, picking up 4 wickets and gave away just 1.09 runs per over.

Tamim Iqbal- The Bangladesh skipper was the man who controlled the run chase for his side, top-scored with a sedate 44, and ensured that Bangladesh chased down the target with relative ease in the first ODI. Tamim is also the leading run-scorer for Bangladesh in ODI cricket and has amassed 7246 runs in the format. If the opening batsman can come good again in the second ODI, Bangladesh will fancy their chances of taking a 2-0 lead.

Akeal Hosein- One bowler who caused some trouble to the Bangladesh willow wielders was debutant Akeal Hosein. The 27-year-old left-arm spinner was highly impressive in his first game for the ‘Men in Maroon’, picking up 3 wickets for just 26 runs. He bowled 44 dot balls in his 10-over spell, highlighting the fact that he is a talent to watch out for in the second ODI.

West Indies

West Indies ( Image Credit: Twitter)

Match Details

The first ODI between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka and is scheduled to get underway at 12:30 PM IST

Preview

Both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are coming back from defeats in their previous series. While Bangladesh was annihilated by New Zealand, Sri Lanka bowed down to West Indies. At home, Bangladesh will feel more confident about their chances. The Tamim Iqbal led side has been bolstered by the return of their ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan. In addition, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Soumya Sarkar, Liton Das form a formidable batting line-up. Also, they have a perfect mix of pace and spin in the bowling department and the all-rounders add a lot of depth to the team.

The visitors, on the other hand, heavily rely on Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva. Sri Lanka have dropped their senior players like Angelo Mathews, Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal for this series thus they are short on experience. If the aforementioned trio fails to perform, Sri Lanka will be in trouble. Also, their bowling looks bleak. They will need big performances from the spin duo of Akila Dananjaya and Wanindu Hasaranga.

Pitch Report

The pitch should be a good cricketing wicket. While there shouldn’t be much on offer for the pacers, spinners will play a big role. Also, the wicket might get slower as the match progresses.

Probable Playing XIs

Bangladesh

Tamim Iqbal(C), Liton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim(WK), Soumya Sarkar, Mahmudullah, Mosaddek Hossain/ Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mehidy Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, and Mustafizur Rahman.

Sri Lanka

Kusal Perera(C/WK), Danushka Gunathilaka, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Wanindu Hasaranga, Akila Dananjaya/ Ashen Bandara, Isuru Udana, Dushmantha Chameera, and Shiran Fernando/ Chamika Karunaratne.

Key Players

Tami Iqbal – Tamim Iqbal is Bangladesh’s highest run-getter across formats and has 13 hundreds and 50 half-centuries to his name. The skipper will look to lead from the front.

Shakib Al Hasan – An outstanding all-rounder who is currently ranked number one in ICC rankings. Shakib has a lot to offer, both with the bat and ball.

Kusal Perera – Kusal Perera will have to play a big role if Sri Lanka has to go the distance. He has scored five ODI centuries and would love to add a few more on the Bangladesh tour.

Probable Winners

Bangladesh has a good record at home thus they will start as favourites.
