England vs West Indies History
The cricket rivalry between England and West Indies dates back to the late 19th century when the English-speaking Caribbean countries selected players to represent them against the visiting English players.
The official cricket regulatory body, the West Indies Cricket Board, joined the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1926 when the Windies became the fourth official “national” test team. Of course, the term national is used loosely here, as the players come from different territories and countries in the Caribbean.
The first official test game that the West Indies played took place in 1928, against the English team. It was a test series that England won 3-0, and thus began an ongoing series. Until 1960, a total of 10 series took place, with England winning five, the Indies three, leaving two drawn.
Starting in 1963, the test matches between the two teams got an official name — The Wisden Trophy. Since then, 28 Wisden Trophy series have been played, with West Indies winning 14 and England 10. Four resulted in a draw.
It seems that once the series received its trophy, the change of tides took place, with West Indies becoming dominant through the second part of the 20th century. They won the first two trophies in 1963 and 1966, followed by two consecutive English victories in 1968 and 1969. From 1973 to 2000, the English team hasn’t won a single Wisden Trophy, as West Indies displayed total dominance. It was the Viv Richards and Michael Holding era, and the English had no answer to the legendary batsman and bowler.
At the turn of the century, the English national team started dominating again, having won eight out of the 11 series in the last two decades. This was the time when English players, such as Michael Vaughan, came to prominence.
Overall, England and West Indies played 160 individual test cricket matches (although this number may increase by the time you read this guide), with the Windies winning 58 and England 51.
The two teams also played a fair share of ODI matches — 102 in total. England has had more success in one-day internationals with 52 victories against West Indies’ 44. The two teams played the first official limited overs match on September 5, 1973. West Indies even won the first two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups, taking place on English soil. England was the Windies’ final opponent in the 1979 World Cup. England only won the World Cup once in 2019.
Finally, the two national teams played 18 Twenty20 official matches, with West Indies winning 11 and England seven. Their first H2H T20I match took place at the Oval in 2007, with West Indies emerging as winners. However, according to the current international T20 rankings, England is the most successful team in the shortened form of cricket, whereas West Indies are ranked #10.

It’s hard to determine an obvious favourite when the two teams meet. Both teams have historically had their ups and downs, and each generation seems to bring a change in the tide. For the upcoming match, England is slightly favoured by the bookmakers — the Poms winning comes with around 1.6 odds as opposed to 2.2 on the Windies.

England vs West Indies: 3rd Test, Day 5 – Who will win the Match? Best Betting Odds
Match Details
The fifth and final day of the third Test between England and West Indies will begin today from 3:30 PM at the Old Trafford in Manchester.
Preview
Rain has once again tried to ruin England’s chances to win the Test. The rain gods weren’t kind to them in the second Test as well but the hosts came out on top thanks to their bowling attack. Going into the fifth day of the final Test match, England need eight wickets to win the match while the West Indies require 389 more runs. A win for the visitors is near impossible at this stage as they will look to draw the game and retain the Wisden Trophy.
Match Situation
West Indies are currently at 10/2 with Shai Hope and Kraigg Brathwaite in the middle. Stuart Broad has picked both the wickets so far. He is only one wicket away from completing 500 scalps in his Test career.
Weather Condition
Weather becomes important after it rained for whole day yesterday. Even today, it will be cloudy for most parts of the day in Manchester with around 30% chances of rain. England will be hoping for play to happen for at least a session and a half for them to try and bowl out the West Indies.

Expected Top Players on the final day
Kraigg Brathwaite
Brathwaite is known to spend his time in the middle when the odds are against him and his team. Expect a fighting knock from him in trying to save the match for the West Indies.
Stuart Broad
This man performing and picking more wickets almost looks certain at the moment. He already has 8 wickets to his name in the match and he will most probably take a 10-wicket haul in the game.
Jofra Archer
Archer can turn out to be an unlikely hero for England. A lot has happened off the field since the first Test and it will be fitting if he takes 4-5 wickets to help his team win the series.
Our Betting Tips
The match situation is heavily in favour of England. Not many are expecting West Indies to draw this match. But weather can prove to be a hindrance. However, some play will take place today and the hosts, the way they are bowling, might not need more than a couple of sessions to seal the game.
Our Prediction – England to win the match.
England vs West Indies, 1st Test – Hosts are expected to dominate the proceedings

After an agonizing four months, Test cricket finds a way back into our lives in the sizzling English summer. Hosts England will be locking horns with the West Indies, whose players traveled to this part nearly a month ago to abide with the ongoing pandemic restrictions.
Not many can forget what happened when these two sides last met in West Indies, when the English were taken down 2-1 in a three-match series. However, the Caribbeans have not done well in England for quite a while now and there are no signs suggesting a change in fortune for the tour.
England will be without their Test skipper Joe Root, who will be accompanying his wife as the couple are expecting a baby. In his absence, the 2019 Garfield Sobers Trophy winner Ben Stokes takes charge of the side, which happens to be the first time he will be doing so.
It will be interesting to see what line up the West Indies come up with for this game. The side will be desperate for the likes of Shai Hope and Kraigg Brathwaite to weather the new ball storm. Considering a fact that the weather will remain a bit cloudy and windy throughout the game, James Anderson and Stuart Broad will find great assistance and will prove to be a nightmare for the opposing team.
Probable XI
England
Rory Burns, Dominic Sibley, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Denly, Ben Stokes (C), Jos Buttler (WK), Dom Bess, Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, James Anderson
West Indies
Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Shai Hope, Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Jermaine Blackwood, Shane Dowrich (WK), Jason Holder (C), Kemar Roach, Alzarri Joseph, Shannon Gabriel
STATS TO REMEMBER:
- Stuart Broad is 15 wickets short of 500 Test wickets, a feat previously achieved only by three fast bowlers – Courtney Walsh, Glenn McGrath and James Anderson.
- This will be the fourth Test to be played at the Rose Bowl. In the previous three, England won twice (both against India) and drew once (against Sri Lanka).
OUR PREDICTION
England at home are always a threat, irrelevant of who is up against them. West Indies do not have their full-strength squad in England right now and that could play into the hands of the hosts.
England are expected to win this game comfortably.
VERDICT
Our bet is on England to emerge victorious.
