With a new set of rules being placed alongside the traditional home/away format, the IPL 2023 is going to be different in so many different ways. There is one new rule that has been added to its guide book which states that the captains will be able to name the playing XIs after the toss.

Earlier, the captains used to change the team sheets prior to the coin flip. But with the new impact player rule, the franchises will have the luxury to pick their best 15 after knowing what they are doing- Batting/Bowling. Ahead of the start of the 16th edition of the cash-rich league, the organizers have decided to bring in a few changes to the competition to make it interesting.

According to playing conditions clause 1.2.1: “Each captain shall nominate 11 players plus a maximum of 5 substitute fielders in writing to the IPL Match Referee after the toss. Other than set out in Clause 1.2.9 no player (member of the playing eleven) may be changed after the nomination and prior to the start of play without the conñsent of the opposing captain.”

There’s also a new and interesting rule that is of an impact player. According to the impact player rule, teams can replace one member of their playing XI during a match. If they think it will be useful then the teams can use the impact player rule, although it’s not mandatory. Under this rule, a team can take out any player of its choosing and substitute the said player with one from the 15 named after the toss. Franchises could introduce their impact player any time before the completion of the 14th over of either inning.

The biggest T20 carnival on the planet- IPL 2023 will kickstart on March 31, 2023, with the defending champions Gujarat Titans going up against the four-time champions Chennai Super Kings in the first match of IPL 2023 at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Apart from the time of the announcement of this new rule of revealing the playing after the toss, the other significant changes to the rules are:

  • Introduction of Impact Player.
  • Over rate penalty of only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle for every over not completed in the allocated time.
  • Unfair movement of the wicketkeeper will result in a dead ball and 5 penalty runs.
  • Unfair movement by a fielder will result in a dead ball and 5 penalty runs.
  • Playing XIs to be decided after the toss.
