The Indian Premier League last year held mega auctions before the competition. The franchise was allowed to retain a maximum of 4 players. RCB decided to go ahead with Virat Kohli, Mohammad Siraj, and Glenn Maxwell. The Australian all-rounder was picked up by RCB ahead of the 2021 IPL season. The player stood up to the expectations and performed well enough to be retained for the mega auctions.

In a recent conversation, Glenn Maxwell opened up on his experience after he was retained by RCB. The Bangalore-based franchise is yet to win its first trophy of the competition. After AB de Villiers decided to retire, there was a lot of pressure on Glenn Maxwell to fit in and score quick runs in the middle. Although Maxwell has played for three different teams in the league on numerous occasions, his consistency hasn’t been as strong as it has been at the RCB.

Maxwell admitted he didn’t anticipate being retained by the Bangalore team even after a standout 2021 season in a loose conversation with Danish Sait on the RCB Podcast. “You never know what’s gonna happen because it’s a big auction. And like, with how many people they were going to retain and we had, obviously, a couple of bowlers; Siraj, Harshal, Yuzi (Chahal), then AB, Virat, and those young Indian players. All could have been retained at some stage. So to retain an overseas batter sometimes isn’t the smartest move. It seems straightforward, but in my head, there was obviously a lot more I had to go through. When I got the phone call that I was gonna be retained, I was pumped and couldn’t wait to stick around,” he said.

The 2022 edition was a bit dull for the all-rounder despite RCB reaching the playoffs. Glenn Maxwell suffered a freak injury right after the T20 World Cup which forced him out of contention to play for the Border-Gavaskar trophy. Nonetheless, the player has completely recovered and will travel to India for the ODI series. RCB begins their IPL journey on April 2 playing against Mumbai Indians.
