The 12th edition of the BBL that began in mid-December came to an end on Saturday, February 4th. The defending champions Perth Scorchers throughout the season had put forward their ‘A’ game and they weren’t any less in the finals against Brisbane Heat. Playing 14 games this season, the Ashton Turner team lost only 3 games in the group stage. However, Brisbane Heat had a surprisingly great comeback in the BBL 12.

Winning the toss in the finals of the BBL, Brisbane Heat captain Jimmy Peirson decided to bat first. They put in a decent performance with the bat giving a target of 176 for the Perth Scorchers to win their 5th BBL title. Scorchers trembled at the start when they lost 3 wickets for 54 runs within 8 overs. Nonetheless, it was captain Ashton Turner who led the team from the front by scoring a quickfire 53 runs from 32 balls before getting run out by Spencer Johnson.

Captain’s wicket left the team in difficulty but in came 19-year-old Cooper Connolly who scored the winning runs for the team. Cooper Connolly smashed 25 runs in 11 balls that included 1 four and 2 sixes. The 19-year-old became the new star for the 5 times BBL champions Perth Scorchers. “It’s a surreal feeling. I have played a lot of games of cricket but you still never know how it’s gonna pan out. To be able to have the closest game of the competition in the final in front of an orange stadium,” Ashton Turner said after the BBL final victory.

“You’ve painted the stadium orange tonight and the support has been overwhelming. We have had a lot of guys in form and that’s not always the case, particularly in T20 cricket. A lot of guys have contributed throughout the year to the wins. We have played an exciting brand of cricket. It’s the ‘never say die’ attitude. I think we have the confidence we can win from anywhere,” Ashton Turner added.
