India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the ongoing fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad due to a lower back injury. No time frame has been put up by the team management for his comeback. He’s most likely to miss out on the forthcoming ODI series against Australia and also remains doubtful for the IPL 2023. Iyer injured himself during the third day of the match at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

His absence created immense confusion among Indian fans today. It all happened when Iyer didn’t come out to bat after all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s (28) dismissal. He was slated to come in at number six but because he felt discomfort in his lower back, the Mumbai-based cricketer didn’t come out to bat. The medical team assessed him and was subsequently ruled out of the fifth day of the match. Iyer, who hadn’t batted on Sunday due to pain in his lower back, might also miss the subsequent three-match ODI series.

His Mumbai teammate, Suryakumar Yadav, who made his Test debut in the first match in Nagpur when Iyer was unavailable due to the same reason, is fielding in his place in this innings. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provided an update on Iyer’s injury. According to the board, the BCCI’s medical team is monitoring him.

“Shreyas Iyer complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play. He has gone for scans and the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him,” the BCCI mentioned in the medical update.

Earlier in January, Iyer missed the home series against New Zealand and also the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar series in Nagpur due to stiffness in his back in recent months. He was sent to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore. The NCA declared him fit for the second Test in Delhi. After missing out on the first Test, Iyer made an immediate return to the playing XI. Iyer was taken for scans and if the scan results indicate further problems, he will be a doubtful starter for IPL 2023, at least in the initial phase of the cash-rich league.
