Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar’s partnership bailed India out of trouble on the second day of the fourth Test against England in Ahmedabad on Friday. Having bowled out England for 205 on the first day’s play, India found themselves in a difficult situation at 146 for 6. But, some fantastic display of batting helped them to end the day at 294 for 7, with a handsome lead of 89 runs.
The day started with India on 24 for 1 with Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma on the crease. But, some consistent bowling by the England team meant that India were 41 for 3, early on day two. Pujara got out for 17 to Jack Leach while skipper Virat Kohli was dismissed by Ben Stokes for a duck. India’s struggles were exaggerated when James Anderson got rid of Ajinkya Rahane before lunch to reduce the hosts to 80 for 4.
After lunch, Rohit along with Pant started to build India’s innings. But Rohit got out LBW to a Stokes delivery on 49. Ravichandran Ashwin then batted cautiously till he was dismissed for 13. When Washington and Pant started their partnership, India was still trailing by 59 runs. However, the two left-handed batsmen stuck together and started chipping away with runs.
They took a more aggressive approach after the tea break and started playing their shots. Pant reached his third 50+ score of the series. However, the turning point was when England took the new ball after the 80th over mark. Pant and Sundar went berserk and smacked the England bowlers to all corners of the ground. Pant reached his third Test century with a six over the mid-wicket boundary.
He fell for 101 runs off 118 balls, but his partnership with Sundar which yielded 113 runs had already deflated the English bowling attack. Sundar notched up his third Test fifty and stayed unbeaten on 60 by the end of day’s play. Axar Patel was also disciplined with the bat, staying unbeaten on 11.
For England, Anderson was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets while Stokes and Leach got two scalps each. England would hope to make early inroads when they return on day three. For India, stretching the lead over 100 runs would put them in the box seat to win this match and enter the ICC World Test Championship final.

Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin wreck havoc as they dismantled the English batting, helping India bowl of England for a below par 205 on a very good batting surface. The spin duo shared 7 wickets between them to give India an upper hand at the end of Day 1 of the fourth Test. India lost Shubman Gill for a duck in their response but Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma looked solid as India ended the day at 24-1.
England will be very disappointed with their performance in the 1st inning. The wicket wasn’t bad, there was no drastic turn and the ball was coming on nicely on the bat. It was certainly not a 200 wicket. England will also rue the fact that multiple batsmen got decent starts but none of them went on to get a big hundred.
Joe Root called the coin right and wasn’t hesitant in deciding to bat first. The wicket looked a belter and a big 1st inning score would have set the game nicely for them. However, that was not the case to be as Axar Patel removed both the openers with not much on the board. Mohammed Siraj then caught Joe Root on the crease, trapping him leg before, leaving England reeling at 30-3 . Ben Stoked joined Jonny Bairstow as the duo steadied the ship with a 38 run partnership before Siraj trapped Bairstow plumb. There was another small partnership between Stokes and Pope before Washington Sunder dismissed Stoked LBW for 55. Daniel Lawrence played some good shots while Ollie Pope also looked solid. Both added 45 runs for the 6th wicket before Pope was caught by Gill at short leg. Lawrence too lost his wicket to a poor shot and was stumped of the bowling of Axar Patel. Post his wicket, England showed little resistance and was bowled out for 205.

When India started their day at 99-3, no one, even in their weirdest dreams would have imagined a carnage of this magnitude. First it was Jack Leach who removed Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma in back to back overs and then Joe Root run riot and cleaned up the Indian lower order, taking his maiden five wicket haul in the process and restricting the first inning lead to a mere 33 runs. The lead wasn’t big and there must have been few nervous faces in the Indian dressing room. The pitch certainly had some demons and a target of 150 could have been a tricky one to chase.
England knew that the second inning won’t bring any respite but the way they stormed back into the match must have boosted their confidence. However, their confidence was shattered in the first ball of the second inning which rattled Zak Crawley’s stumps. Axar then removed Jonny Barstow to leave England reeling at 0-2. England had no answers to the duo of Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin as they were bundled out for 82, giving India a target of 49 runs to win, which the Indian openers wiped with without breaking a sweat.
The loss have knocked England out of the world Test championship but they’ll be more worried about the fact that the next test will also be played on the same pitch. They need to do some serious work on their skills against the spin because that’s what they’ll be getting in the next game. They might also consider tweaking their playing combination and bring in an extra spinner. There’s a lot to think, not just for England but for India as well. The way they collapsed certainly didn’t impressed their skipper Virat Kohli who didn’t shy away from criticizing the poor application of the batsmen.
The win has boosted India’s chances of the playing New Zealand in the summit clash of the World Test Championship. If India can escape a loss in the final Test, it’s going to be India Vs New Zealand at Lords in the final of the WTC.

Just like the previous two days of the match, Day 3 of the second Test between India and England belonged to the hosts. The start wasn’t good but the end couldn’t have been better. England are 53-3, still needing 429 for a win. India started the day at 54-1 but were soon reduced to 106-6. Things could have been tricky but Ravichandran Aswin and Virat Kohli joined hands to stitch a 96 run stand. Kohli was looking solid and it seemed that he’ll end his drought of centuries. However, that was not the case to be as Moeen Ali trapped him plumb for 62.
The wickets were tumbling from the other end but Ravichandran Ashwin stood tall, continuing his love with the Chennai wicket. He toiled the English bowlers and stroked a magnificent hundred to take India to 286, setting England a target of 482 to win. Even though cricket is a game of uncertainty, this is just too much to expect. The pitch was turning square and against a quality spin attack, it was going to be very difficult for the England batsmen. The visitors cautiously started their innings but everyone knew that a wicket is just around the corner. And it came in the 8th over when Axar Patel trapped Dominic Sibley leg before.
Rory Burns was struggling and it was Ashwin who ended his misery. England sent Jack Leach as their night watchman, only to be dismissed for a first-ball duck. Joe Root then joined Daniel Lawrence and survived a close call for LBW in the last over of the day. The win is out of the equation and it’s just a matter of time before India level the 4 match series. Joe Root is still out there but how long can he resist on this venomous pitch? If India dominated Day 1, they are bossing the game right now. Fair to say that the visitors are in the worst possible situation and only a miracle, or something even more powerful, can save them from the shambles. The wicket was difficult, no doubt, but it was disheartening to see a class side surrender so easily. At the same time, Ravichandran Ashwin deserves a standing ovation for his impeccable bowling that allowed him to pick his 29th fifer in Tests.
Ishant was exceptional, Axar Patel bowled with great control and Siraj once again proved that he’s grown rapidly as a bowler. It was a near perfect bowling performance that saw England bundled out for a mere 134 in reply to India’s 329. Ishant set the tone early, getting Rory Burns out for a duck on the 3rd delivery of the inning. Ashwin started from the other end and it was evident that he’s going to prove a nightmare for the English batsmen.
The ball was turning square and England batsmen had no clue about it. He picked up his first wicket in the form of Dominic Sibley, who in an attempt to sweep Ashwin looped an easy catch to Virat Kohli at leg slip. One shot that earned Root heaps of runs in the last few Tests became the cause of this downfall in this match. But this was always coming. The turn and bounce was difficult to control and a sweep was a high risk shot, especially if you’re playing it against the spin. Root went for one, only to top edge an easy catch to Ravi Ashwin, handing Axar his maiden Test wicket. Daniel Lawrence then fell on the last ball of the 1st session.
The second session followed the same trend as the visitors crashed like a deck of cards. The pitch was turning but the apart from the wicket of Ben Stokes, none of the batsmen got out to obnoxious deliveries. Maybe, the deliveries earlier created doubts in their minds that led to false shots.
The lead was a massive one for India and the start they got would have crushed any hopes England had of making a comeback. India are 54-1, leading by 249 runs which already looks a winning total on this wicket. The hosts would look to bat for two more sessions and give England a target of over 400. With Rohit Sharma set and Kohli, Pant slated to come next, fans will be in for the treat.

However, looking at the pitch, India already had a very good total on the board. Rishabh Pant came and played some brilliant shots to take India to 300-6 at the end of Day 1. Considering the surface, this is a massive score and if India can add another 50 runs, they’ll take a massive lead in the match.

To be fair, not many people would have expected England to play the way they did in the first Test. Now, what do we expect from the England batsmen in the next game? The kind of form Joe Root is in, India would be under serious pressure to chalk out a plan to get Root early. If they do so, they’ll definitely be ahead in the match. Players like Ben Stokes, Dominic Sibley, Rory Burns and Ollie Pope can also be dangerous but if Root fails, they too can crumble under pressure. Talking about their bowling, James Anderson will be very dangerous with the new ball. Also, the spinners Jack Leach and Dom Bess have proven that they can’t be taken lightly, no matter if they’re not that experienced.
There were a lot of expectations from the Indian batsmen but apart from Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara, everyone surrendered infront of some class English bowling. Now what’s next for India? They can’t afford to lose another match if they are to face New Zealand in the summit clash of the World Test Championship. We expect a much better performance from India in the next game. They were playing at home after a long time and it must have been difficult for the team to get used to the conditions. One match doesn’t make them a bad team and they’ve shown that they’re ready to fight till the last breath.
England were exceptional but it’ll be interesting to see whether or not they’ll be able to deliver back to back performances. As of now, we think that both teams are on par with each other in terms of quality but we’ll hand over the home advantage to India. The wicket will offer much more turn and England batsmen will have to work very hard to score.

India had a good start to Day 4 of the 1st Test vs England with Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin motoring along at good pace. The duo added 48 runs in 12 overs before a peach from Jack Leach drew curtains on a gritty knock from Ravichandran Ashwin. With not much quality to come, Sundar decided to up the ante and played some magnificent shots. The wickets kept on tumbling from the other end as the Indian innings folded out for 337, handing the visitors a massive lead of 241 runs and Washington Sunder left stranded unbeaten on 85.
England decided to bat again and lost Rory Burns to Ravichandran Ashwin on the first ball of the second innings. The bowlers were right on the money and didn’t allowed the English batsmen to run away with the game. Ashwin accounted for his second wicket of the day as Dominic Sibley played one straight into the hands of Cheteshwar Pujara at leg slip. Joe Root arrived and smacked the Indian bowlers to all corners in a blistering knock of 40 off just 32 deliveries. It was clear that England was looking to set a target that’s completely out of India’s reach but the wicket of Joe Root slowed down the rate of scoring.
Ollie Pope played some good shots but Dominic Bess and Jos Buttler struggled to hit those lusty blows. Ravichandran Ashwin cleaned up the tail, registering his 27th 5 wicket hall in the process as England were bowled out for 178. Chasing a target of 420, Indian openers started cautiously. However, Jack Leach got the better of Rohit Sharma with an unplayable delivery in the 5th over. Pujara joined Shubman Gill and the pair batted out the remaining overs as India ended the day at 39-1, still 381 runs behind the target.
India vs England: 1st Test, Day 3 – Review; Best Betting Odds for Day 4

Rishabh Pant’s flamboyance and Cheteshwar Pujara’s solidity lent some respectability to an otherwise disappointing performance with the willow by the Indian batsmen on Day 3 of the first Test against England at Chennai. While Pant scored a racing 88 ball 91, Pujara took his time, consuming 143 balls, and scored 73. Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin, both local boys, played out 17.2 overs as India ended the third Day with their scorecard reading 257/6.
Except for Pujara and Pant, the rest of the Indian batting line up came a cropper. The Indian opening partnership lasted just 3.3 overs, as Jofra Archer removed Rohit Sharma. Sharma played at a probing delivery from Archer just outside off stump and nicked the red cherry to Jos Buttler behind the stumps. Shubman Gill dazzled in his brief 28 ball stay, before he chipped Archer straight to James Anderson at mid-on, and was dismissed for 29.
Virat Kohli made his awaited return back to the side, but the skipper’s return turned out to be a disappointing one. Kohli scratched around for 48 deliveries before Dom Bess dismissed him. Bess tossed the ball up, the ball spun in, Kohli went for a hard defensive prod, the ball took the inside edge and went straight to short leg. The skipper was dismissed for 11.
Ajinkya Rahane followed his skipper to the dressing room just 2 overs later, and a brilliant piece of fielding from skipper Joe Root brought about Rahane’s downfall. India’s vice-captain came down the track in a bid to clear the off-side field. But Root just flung himself to his left at the cover to pouch a stunner. Pant and Pujara kept England at bay for 24.1 overs, before Pujara was dismissed in an extremely unlucky fashion.
To a short delivery from Bess, India’s No.3 went for the pull, the ball ricocheted off the shoulder of the short leg fielder and went straight into the hands of mid-wicket. The final Indian wicket to fall in the day was Rishabh Pant. When he was just 9 runs short of a century, the left-hander went for an extravagant heave through the offside but spooned the cherry straight into the hands of cover.
As far as England are concerned, Dom Bess was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 4 wickets, giving away just 55 runs. In the morning session, England played 10.1 overs, and added 23 runs to their overnight total, to amass a mammoth score of 578 in their first innings. And, the visitors are in the driver’s seat at the end of Day 3, with India still trailing by 321 runs in the first innings.

Joe Root scored a commanding double century as England took the honors for the second day in a row in the ongoing first Test against India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. India’s bowlers were made to toil hard on a slow and flat track as England’s batsmen led by their in-form skipper made merry.
Starting the day on 263 for 3, England were on 555 for 8 at stumps on day two. Root and Ben Stokes started the proceedings with the bat on the second day and overcame everything that India threw at them in the opening session. Stokes was occasionally troubled by India’s spinners but remained firm while Root looked comfortable throughout his knock.
By the time lunch was called, the duo had added 92 runs to England’s overnight score. India finally tasted success in the second session when Stokes miscued a Shahbaz Nadeem delivery to depart for 82. But that dismissal did not bring any respite for the hosts as Root and Ollie Pope kept piling on the misery.
Root, who had started the day on 128, went on to complete his double century in style when he hit Ravichandran Ashwin for a maximum. He and Pope added 86 runs for the fifth wicket before departing in quick succession to leave England on 477 for 6 from 473 for 4. But just when it looked like India would claw their way back into the game, Jos Buttler and Dom Bess steadied the ship for the tourists.
The duo put on a 48-run stand to take the score past the 500-run mark and ensured that their team did not let such a strong position slip. Ishant Sharma then provided India with some much-needed breakthroughs by castling Buttler and Jofra Archer on consecutive deliveries.
The tiring home side could have wrapped up the innings late in the day but for a horrible dropped catch by Rohit Sharma to reprieve Bess. Bess and Jack Leach kept frustrating India and added 30 more runs before the day’s action came to an end.

The much-awaited four-match series between India and England went underway at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Friday. After the visitors won the toss on a track that seemed to have little in it for the bowlers, England got off to a healthy start with both the openers – Dom Sibley and Rory Burns – looking settled during their 63-run partnership for the opening wicket.
Just when it seemed that England might be able to pull off a wicket-less session, an ambitious reverse sweep from Rory Burns off Ravichandran Ashwin brought the first success for India. Skipper Virat Kohli’s plan of introducing Jasprit Bumrah to build pressure on the new man Dan Lawrence paid dividends too, as the pacer pinned him leg before for a duck, with one that shaped into him before hitting him on the pads.
While the twin strikes towards the end of the first session gave India a reason to celebrate, what followed in the day quite did not. Playing his 100th Test match, and returning after an extremely eventful series against Sri Lanka, Joe Root managed to carry the same form into this series as he, alongside a patient Dom Sibley at the other end, stitched a 200-run partnership for the third wicket, which lasted 390 balls.
Root went on to register his 3rd ton in a row after India had to endure a wicket-less second session. Facing as many as 286 deliveries for his 87, which included 12 fours, Sibley ensured that he made India toil hard in the hot and humid conditions of Chennai. India’s quest for a wicket finally came true in the last over of the day, when Jasprit Bumrah pinned Sibley leg before bringing his patient outing to a close. Joe Root stood unbeaten on 127, as England went to stumps 263/3.
