“We won’t win big tournaments until…”- Irfan Pathan highlights biggest concern of India choking in ICC tournaments; Suggests crucial changes
Team India won the last ICC championship when MS Dhoni led the team to win the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 in England, beating the hosts. Since then, India has qualified for a number of knockouts in the ICC tournaments but couldn’t end up winning the title. In 2023, India had a similar story.
They lost the finals of the World Test Championship and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia. The next ICC tournament is just a few months away. The T20 World Cup 2024 will take place in the USA and the West Indies. India is one of the top sides in the shorter format, but it won’t be easy for them to win. The coming tournament will have a total of 20 teams.
Irfan Pathan on why Team India hasn’t won an ICC tournament in last decade
Team India will once again enter the tournament with the hope of winning, but it will take a lot for them to cross the finish line. So what has been lacking for Team India? Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan points out the main difference that has prevented India from winning a major tournament. In an interview with Star Sports, Pathan said that India lacks in its bowling department.
The 2007 T20 World Cup-winning all-rounder feels that until India doesn’t find 3-4 bowlers who can take wickets at any time, India can’t win. He said, “The bowling needs to be strengthened. Until we do that, we won’t win big tournaments. You need to have five proper wicket-taking bowlers, and at least three-four of them should be able to bowl at any phase. If we can find such bowlers, the World Cup isn’t far away.“
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar also added to it and said that India needs someone from the top five to bowl a few overs. He said that all-rounders play a crucial role in the game. If someone from the top order can bowl a few overs in the middle, that can help the team and give more options to the captain.
